The finest European cities to explore in December
Looking to check off some European cities from your bucket list while they're covered in snow? Or perhaps you're interested in discovering some hidden gems? Here are a few winter city breaks for December that shine in winter and are just as delightful in January and February:
1. Tromsø, Norway
Tromsø, Norway is a winter wonderland. In this charming, walkable city, you can stay at a lodge adorned with reindeer hides before taking a cable car to witness the stunning Northern Lights.
Situated as far north as possible in mainland Europe, Tromsø offers an unforgettable winter getaway. Nestled within the Arctic Circle, the city has plenty of December activities, including The Polar Museum, dog sledding, boat tours, Fjord adventures, and even winter camping in cozy yurts.
Must try: The period from November to February is the best time for whale-watching in Tromsø.
2. Vilnius, Lithuania
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is one of the best-kept secrets for winter city getaways. This medieval city is filled with historic treasures. Bundle up (average highs are around 32°F) and explore the charming UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, making sure to visit the iconic Vilnius Cathedral. If you go in December, don’t miss the Vilnius Christmas Market and tree, which open on December 1st.
Must try: Check out Piles Street, the oldest street in the city, lined with excellent restaurants and bars.
3. Zagreb, Croatia
Croatia is famous as a summer getaway, but Zagreb is also a fantastic European destination to explore in December. Discover unique treats (and almost anything else you can think of) at Zagreb‘s Hrelić flea market, featuring delights like eggs in chili and prosciutto-wrapped frogs. It’s a wonderful place to stroll, even if you’re not planning to make a purchase.
Zagreb offers plenty of indoor attractions to keep you entertained as well. I recommend visiting the Muzej Mimara museum, climbing to the top of Lotrščak Tower for stunning views, or securing tickets to an opera performance at the Croatian National Theatre. Afterwards, unwind in one of the many bars along Tkalčićeva Street with a pint of local beer.
Must try: The Zagreb Christmas Market is a truly enchanting place to visit.
4. Gothenburg, Sweden
If you’re seeking a walkable city where snow is likely, Gothenburg could be the perfect city break for you. It’s a charming alternative to bustling Stockholm and a cozy choice for a winter getaway in December.
December offers a wealth of activities, including ice skating, the Christmas market at Liseberg—one of Scandinavia’s largest theme parks—and the Stora Saluhallen Food Market. If you’re staying for a few days, I also suggest taking a day trip to the snowy Gothenburg archipelago.
Must try: Explore Haga, a trendy pedestrian street filled with cafes, charming shops, and lovely buildings.
5. Paris, France
Paris is a timeless winter city break, and for good reason. The so-called City of Love transforms into a picturesque destination in December.
Immerse yourself in the festive spirit at the Christmas markets and warm up in one of the many cafes and museums. In the evening, visit the Eiffel Tower to see it twinkle. If you’re traveling with kids, a trip to Disneyland is always a hit. Later in the season, you can also partake in the city’s vibrant Chinese New Year celebrations and the long-standing Paris Carnival.
Must try: Ice skating on the rooftop of the Galeries Lafayette.
6. Poznan, Poland
Poznan is brimming with culture, delightful cuisine, and affordable local beer. Explore the delis and patisseries that line Old Town and the Market Square. History enthusiasts will appreciate visiting the city's main attractions and checking out its museums (many of which are free). Planning a Christmas getaway? The Poznan Christmas market is enchanting and will be open from November 19th to December 23rd.
Must try: Visit the Croissant Museum, which celebrates the unique St Martin’s Croissant – a local tradition.
7. Bath, UK
With its warm-hued Georgian architecture, Bath in the UK is the ideal spot for a lesser-known city break this December. This ancient city is renowned for its historic Roman Baths, built nearly 2,000 years ago.
Ideal for winter walks, with a plethora of fantastic restaurants and bars to choose from. Seeking romance? Stroll hand in hand along the beautiful Royal Crescent before visiting the picturesque Pulteney Bridge. Bath is also just about 2 hours from London, making it easy to combine this trip with a visit to the UK’s capital.
Must try: Relax in The Roman Baths, which are located right in the heart of the city.
8. Berlin, Germany
If I had to pick just one destination for the best European cities to visit in December, it would be Berlin. The city boasts some of the finest Christmas markets in Germany and a wealth of cultural treasures to entertain visitors of all ages during the chilly days. Plus, winter is usually quieter and more affordable.
Don’t miss historic sites like the Berlin Wall and Museum Island. And, of course, make sure to visit a Berlin Christmas market. There are numerous markets throughout the city featuring wooden stalls offering everything from gifts to delicious treats. Planning a New Year’s Eve getaway? Berlin’s nightlife is renowned.
Must try: Warm up and indulge in both international and local delights at the Markthalle Neun food market.

Pack your sweaters and get your camera ready for that perfect fairytale shot. Tallinn looks as if it has been taken straight from a postcard in winter, with its snow-covered churches and cobbled streets. Estonia’s capital is also brimming with culture. Be sure to explore Telliskivi Loomelinnak, an area filled with bars, cafes, and flea markets.
