The optimal time to visit Cuba
Often referred to as the no-winter island, Cuba experiences a range of mild to hot weather throughout the seasons.
Thanks to its stunning beaches and tropical climate, sunbathing is an option in Cuba year-round. July and August bring the warmest temperatures, but it's wise to check weather forecasts before planning your trip, especially during the hurricane season from June to November.
Schools in Cuba are closed in July and August, making this a peak time for local tourism, while cultural festivals and live music events fill the calendar throughout the year.
Here’s a rundown of the best times to experience Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean.

During the period from November to March, Cuba sees an influx of tourists as families flee the cold of North America. Hotel and homestay prices peak, especially around Christmas and New Year.
The busy tourist season necessitates advance bookings for accommodations and car rentals. The weather remains mild, typically dry, and sunny, but cold fronts can bring cooler evenings in January and February, so packing a jacket is advisable.
In December, a film festival transforms Havana, while local celebrations and traditional events known as parrandas and charangas set off a fireworks frenzy among residents.
If you visit in January, anticipate lively jam sessions in cities like Havana and Santiago de Cuba during the jazz festival, Festival Internacional de Jazz, attracting musicians and fans globally.
February is the prime month for diving and snorkeling along Cuba’s southern coast, as well as for outdoor adventures like hiking and cycling.
During this season, Cuba becomes a temporary haven for an impressive array of migratory birds—over 260 species.
With migratory birds mixing with local species, March is ideal for birdwatching, particularly in the wetlands of Ciénaga de Zapata and the Peninsula de Guanahacabibes in Pinar del Río.

The summer months of July and August are the most vibrant time to visit Cuba, but they also bring the highest temperatures and considerable rainfall. With schools on break, it's the peak season for domestic tourism, leading to crowded beaches and bustling hotels in popular areas like Varadero and surrounding islands such as Cayo Coco.
Be sure to secure your accommodations and activities in advance. Santiago de Cuba celebrates Carnaval, one of the country’s most exciting festivals, featuring vibrant parades, music, and dance.
In August, the island continues to buzz with summer energy as Havana hosts its carnival and Varadero presents a lively music festival that beautifully blends jazz with son cubano, a genre that forms the basis of modern salsa. Hotel prices begin to drop after August 25.
April and October are ideal months for avoiding crowds.
By April, Cuba enjoys warm weather with less rainfall compared to the upcoming summer months. Beaches are less populated than in peak summer, except during Semana de la Victoria (Victory Week), when locals celebrate the island's triumph over anti-Castro forces at Playa Girón in 1961. This event can coincide with Easter week, attracting more international visitors.
October remains warm but is less humid than the summer months, making it a great time to find good deals before the peak season begins. However, keep in mind the potential for severe tropical storms as hurricane season wraps up in November.

While it can be hot and rainy at the beginning and end of summer, the low season presents the best opportunity for affordable stays at hotels and casas particulares (private homestays). Always consult the weather forecast before your trip, as hurricane season runs from June to November, bringing the possibility of intense storms.
May also features Romerías de Mayo, attracting music lovers to Holguín, while Havana's Mayo Teatral appeals to theater enthusiasts. This month is particularly favorable for budget travelers and coincides with the three-week celebration of the LGBTIQ+ community, the Conga Cubana contra la Homofobia y la Transfobia, a vibrant music parade featuring colorful dances along Havana’s La Rampa (Calle 23).
Look forward to conga performances – a lively style of Cuban rumba danced while walking – along with educational workshops, concerts, and conferences. Although June marks the start of hurricane season, you can still enjoy warm beach days with fewer crowds. This month offers a chance to experience provincial festivals before the hurricane activity intensifies.
