Are you in search of the ideal spots for solo travel around the world? As an avid solo traveler, I believe the best destinations share key traits: safety, abundant activities, and chances to meet new people.

Recently, Dinogo and OpenTable carried out a study on leading destinations for solo travelers. If solo travel is on your radar, your next favorite destination might be featured here.

Although I embarked on my first solo journey a decade ago, it took me a while to truly appreciate the benefits of solo travel, which I only fully embraced in my 30s. Now? I’m more than willing to champion it.

Whether you aim to enhance your self-connection, boost your confidence, or explore the world before time runs out – just go for it.

Top international destinations for solo travelers

1. Berlin

Berlin tops the list of solo travel destinations. This historic and artistic city is incredibly walkable and packed with activities. Spend your days wandering the streets on foot or by bike, soaking in iconic landmarks and vibrant street art. Treat yourself to the delectable pastries available at numerous German cafés—be sure to visit Canal Berlin for some amazing artisanal selections.

While exploring different neighborhoods, it’s essential to be mindful of the profound history surrounding you. Approach your visits with a desire to learn and respect, rather than taking frivolous photos, for instance.

Berlin is known for its lively and diverse atmosphere, brimming with art and culture.

The city boasts a thriving nightlife scene that you can enjoy as a solo traveler, provided you take standard safety precautions. Alternatively, consider connecting with fellow travelers at a hostel or on a group tour to find companions for a night out in Berlin’s clubs.

2. Vancouver

For nature enthusiasts, Vancouver is a must-visit with its stunning mountains, vibrant forests, and coastal charm. If you're looking to get active on your solo getaway, you can Mytour, hike, golf, camp, and enjoy sunset walks amidst breathtaking scenery.

Adventurers shouldn’t miss the Capilano Suspension Bridge!

Make sure to check out Granville Island, a popular spot that offers beautiful views of Vancouver and a variety of shops to explore. Stanley Park is perfect for cycling or jogging. For a more tranquil experience, visit the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

For a relaxing experience amidst Vancouver’s stunning scenery, consider planning a picnic at one of its parks or beaches. If you’re seeking quality time in nature, Vancouver should be at the top of your list.

3. Montreal

Another fantastic destination for solo travel, as noted by Dinogo and OpenTable, is Montréal. If you’re coming from the US and not ready to venture all the way to Europe alone, Montréal is a great alternative.

Situated in the French-speaking region of Canada, French is the official language, but you can easily navigate with English. However, practicing a friendly “Bonjour.” to start conversations can be beneficial.

When you receive a “Bonjour / Hi,” reply with “Hi,” to express your preference to converse in English. Although you’re in Canada, the atmosphere will remind you of Europe as you wander through Montréal’s delightful Old Town and visit the stunning Notre Dame Basilica.

As Canada’s premier destination for food enthusiasts, this trip is ideal if you’re passionate about great dining. Unsure where to start? OpenTable suggests trying Le Pois Penché for comforting French classics, LOV McGill for delicious vegetarian options, and Restaurant Toque! for authentic French Canadian fare.

Montréal also boasts a vibrant nightlife. As a solo traveler, you can either visit a bar on your own or join a local bar crawl with a group. I’ve experienced both in different cities, and each can be enjoyable depending on your comfort level. Just be mindful not to overindulge to stay aware.

4. Paris

If you’re seeking solo birthday trip ideas, I highly recommend Paris. The City of Lights provided a stunning backdrop for my solo birthday celebrations a few years back.

Some people claim Paris is overrated or that Parisians can be unfriendly. However, having visited five times, often solo, my fondness for the city only grows. English is now more commonly spoken than in the past, and you’ll likely find menus available in English.

While it’s not essential to speak French, it’s polite to greet everyone with a “Bonjour,” upon entering shops or starting new interactions—it’s considered rude not to do so!

Don’t think of Paris as just a couple’s destination. As a solo traveler, you can still soak in the romance this city has to offer. Stroll through the charming streets of Montmartre, join a pastry-making class (I recommend booking with Patisserie a la Carte), explore art in its many museums, hunt for vintage finds in the Marais, or enjoy a Seine river cruise.

Additionally, the café culture is vibrant, and it’s common to sit alone at a table, simply enjoying the world around you.

5. Milan

Italy stands out as one of my top solo travel spots worldwide, thanks to its melodic language, well-preserved ancient landmarks, delicious cuisine, and welcoming culture. However, each city and region in Italy offers a distinct atmosphere and unique experiences. For art enthusiasts and fashion lovers, Milan is your ideal destination.

Milan is generally safe, though it’s wise to take standard precautions. Be especially alert for pickpockets; using an anti-theft, cross-body bag worn in front of you is a smart choice.

The key attractions in Milan’s city center are conveniently located close together, making it easy to explore alone on foot. You can quickly move from the historic Old Town to the vibrant Navigli canal district with a pleasant walk.

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a new place is through its culinary delights. In Milan, I highly recommend enrolling in a cooking class. After taking a class in Rome years ago, I can still whip up homemade pasta with ease.

Additionally, Milan serves as a fantastic base for various day trips, including the stunning Lake Como.

6. Dublin 

Ireland is experiencing a surge in popularity this year, with many people I know excitedly planning trips to the Emerald Isle. Dublin ranks sixth among the top destinations for solo travel.

One major advantage of visiting Dublin is that English is the primary language spoken. Navigating the city alone is also straightforward, thanks to the accessible buses and trams, known locally as the Luas, meaning ‘speed’ in Irish.

On top of that, Dublin is a blast. 

Wander the cobbled streets, and you’ll feel the lively atmosphere. It’s easy to find yourself dancing with a friendly stranger at one of Dublin's countless bars or simply watching the joyful couples twirling in the streets. Don’t miss the Guinness Storehouse; whether it’s your first taste of Guinness or not, enjoy a pint at the Gravity Bar while taking in stunning 360-degree views of the city. 

Dublin offers a wealth of activities to dive into its rich history and culture. One of my fondest experiences was taking a guided day trip to the Cliffs of Moher—a fantastic way to explore while meeting fellow travelers. 

If you enjoy engaging with locals, Dublin is the perfect place, as the people here are typically warm and welcoming.

7. Toronto 

For international adventures that feel a bit like home, Canada is resonating with solo travelers. Toronto ranks as the seventh best destination for solo travel. 

As someone from Chicago, I’d like to point out that Toronto and Chicago have been recognized as sister cities since 1991, sharing similarities in geography and population. 

If you enjoy the energy of major cities, you’re likely to love Toronto. The city is filled with working professionals, making it common to see individuals dining alone.

Take time to explore vibrant neighborhoods such as Kensington Market and the Distillery District. For stunning sunset views, hop on a ferry or water taxi to the Toronto Islands, where you’ll find an amusement park and various water activities—perfect for a half or full day of fun. 

Don’t miss Toronto’s CN Tower, a tourist favorite, and if you’re a hockey fan, the Hockey Hall of Fame is a must-see. Got an extra day? Consider booking a guided trip to Niagara Falls.

8. Dubai 

If you’re looking for safe destinations for solo female travelers, consider Dubai. The city is equipped with numerous security cameras, and strict penalties for crimes enhance the overall sense of safety.

Additionally, Dubai is a great choice for solo women travelers, as many hotels offer ‘Ladies Day’ discounts, perfect for enjoying a luxurious pool or private beach experience. 

Often seen as the Middle East's global hub, Dubai has a high prevalence of English speakers, so you needn't worry if you don't know Arabic. However, learning a few basic phrases like hello, please, thank you, sorry, and excuse me is always appreciated when visiting a new country. 

Navigating Dubai is easy with options like Uber, the local Careem app, taxis, or public transport. Make sure to explore the expansive Dubai Mall and enjoy the fun at Global Village. There’s a wealth of activities in Dubai for those who appreciate luxury and stunning natural scenery.

Keep in mind that you’ll be in a Muslim country. Dressing modestly is crucial, not just for your comfort but also to show respect for local customs. 

9. Mexico City 

Mexico City may not be the first place you think of when considering safe solo travel destinations, but from my own experiences, I can assure you it’s a fantastic option for those traveling alone. 

Imagine this: serene green parks, streets lined with purple Jacaranda trees, charming cafes, trendy cocktail bars, and the vibrant energy reminiscent of cities like Chicago or NYC. 

That’s the essence of Mexico City for me. This vibrant global hub offers a fantastic opportunity for cultural immersion, meeting people from around the world, and satisfying your culinary cravings.

Follow the same safety measures you would in any major city. Keep your belongings safe, avoid wandering alone after dark (opt for group activities instead), and stay aware by moderating your alcohol consumption. 

Research neighborhoods where you might feel most at ease solo, such as Polanco, Condesa, and Roma Norte.

One of my favorite activities is grabbing a pastry from Esperanza and savoring it in the nearby Chapultepec Park. I also enjoy strolling along Avenida Amsterdam and browsing the shops that catch my eye.

There are numerous small group food and activity tours or day trips available if you decide to seek some company during your adventures. 

10. London 

London ranks as a solo travel favorite, according to Dinogo and OpenTable. This bustling metropolis allows you to easily blend in with its diverse international crowd, making it ideal for solo adventurers seeking vibrant experiences. 

Though London is vast and can feel a bit daunting, it boasts a highly efficient underground train system—the tube. The Covent Garden area is centrally located and a great place to stay for newcomers. 

Regardless of where you choose to stay, ensure it’s near a tube station. During my last trip, I stayed at the Hilton Paddington, conveniently linked to the Paddington station, making my travels around London quick and easy.

During that trip, I arranged a photo shoot with a professional photographer. It turned out to be a fantastic way to connect with fellow travelers, discover the best viewpoints with local insight, and capture lasting memories of my solo journey all at once. 

Typically, I recommend skipping the tour buses and exploring new cities on foot. However, in London, riding a double-decker bus is an essential part of the experience. Climb to the top deck and try to secure a front-row seat to enjoy the sights from a fresh perspective. 

London offers countless things to do, from museums and performances to delightful afternoon teas. The city boasts a vibrant food scene, and while making reservations is wise, as a solo traveler, you can also try your luck by simply walking in. 

For a moment of relaxation, grab a coffee and head to Potters Field Park. Take a seat and enjoy the stunning views of the iconic Tower Bridge, which happens to be my favorite landmark in London.
