Top Destinations for Crafts, Culture, Shopping, and Scenic Views in the Medina of Fez
The medina of Fez, or Fes-el-Bali, is a maze of winding paths bustling with people and the occasional donkey, reminiscent of a bygone era.
This UNESCO World Heritage site is notoriously tricky to explore alone, so hiring a guide is advisable to help you find your way, at least during your first couple of days. (Michael Diamond is T+L’s A-List expert on Morocco.)

Its stunning architecture alone makes it worth the trip, featuring a central courtyard where traders once rested. The museum showcases beautifully carved dowry chests, doors, and furniture, illustrating the rich tradition of Moroccan carpentry over the centuries. Don’t forget to ascend to the rooftop for a relaxing cup of tea with a view of the ancient city.
Close to Fez's iconic blue gate, Bab Bou Jeloud, lies the 14th-century Madrasa Bou Inania, offering another insight into Moroccan craftsmanship. Following recent restoration, the school's zellij tilework, intricately carved stucco, and cedar wood details look as stunning as they did 600 years ago. Just across the street, look up to catch a glimpse of Dar al-Magana, the 14th-century clock house that once featured a water clock operating through a system of windows, weights, and bowls.

Then, step through a discreet entrance into Le Jardin des Biehn. This serene courtyard, adorned with trees and fountains, provides a perfect setting for a drink or a moment of tranquility away from the bustling medina. If you're weary of bargaining in the souks, visit the on-site shop, where you'll find exquisite vintage carpets, caftans, and jewelry. Consider staying at Riad Fes and make sure to return to the rooftop bar in time to enjoy the sunset with a glass of Moroccan vin gris in hand.
