United to Halt These 7 Routes in June
Following JetBlue Airways, Alaska Airlines, and Southwest Airlines having to reduce numerous summer flights last month due to pilot and staffing shortages, United Airlines is suspending seven long-haul services in June due to a different issue: insufficient aircraft.
Specifically, the airline is awaiting approval to reactivate its Boeing 777s, which have been out of service since February 2021 because of an engine explosion that scattered debris over a Denver neighborhood.
“United routinely adjusts our schedule based on factors such as resource availability, including aircraft,” United stated. “We are eager to resume these flights soon.”
The routes that are suspended for June include:
- Newark International Airport (EWR) and Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG)
- Newark and Honolulu International Airport (HNL)
- Newark and Tokyo's Narita International Airport (NRT)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport (GRU)
- Washington Dulles and Geneva Airport in Switzerland (GVA)
- Washington Dulles and Honolulu
- Washington Dulles and Dublin Airport in Ireland (DUB)
The airline states that these routes are expected to resume operations in July.
Notably, the temporary suspension of these routes coincides with the airline's expansion into six new destinations—the largest transatlantic growth in the company's history. Over the next month, United will begin flights to Amman, Jordan; Bergen, Norway; the Azores in Portugal; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands, all of which are currently unserved by any other North American airline. United will also restart its service between San Francisco and Melbourne in June.
