Mexico’s high season aligns with the dry spell from November to March (the rainy period spans June to October). These comfortably dry months attract many winter travelers escaping colder climates, making it the perfect time to explore Mexico's outdoor and natural offerings.
On the Baja Peninsula, vibrant flowers bloom, landscapes turn lush, surfers enjoy big waves, and swimming with whale sharks is an option from October to April. In the Northern Central Highlands, it's an ideal period for visiting waterfalls and rivers, while Oaxaca offers prime hiking opportunities during these months.
Don't forget to pack a sweater when visiting high-altitude locations like San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, as evenings and mornings can be quite cool. In the Western Central Highlands, the forests of the Reserva de la Biosfera Santuario Mariposa Monarca (Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve) glow orange as millions of monarch butterflies migrate there from late October to mid-March.
The months of November, December, and January see the highest flight prices to Mexico. Be prepared for busy attractions and an influx of visitors in hotspots like Tulum, especially before New Year’s Eve and during the first week of the year, which is packed with major electronic music festivals.
February is ideal for whale-watching in the Baja Peninsula, while March brings the Vernal Equinox, attracting crowds to Chichén Itzá to witness serpent-like shadows on the El Castillo pyramid (this phenomenon also occurs in autumn). Popular archaeological sites like Teotihuacán north of Mexico City and Guachimontones west of Guadalajara also draw visitors during the spring equinox.
During March and April, many U.S. students flock to coastal destinations such as Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas for extravagant spring break celebrations. Whether you decide to join the festivities or steer clear, be aware of potential fare increases during this busy time.
Semana Santa (Easter Week), which falls in March or April, is the busiest holiday week in Mexico, leading to crowded accommodations and transportation, with many businesses in inland cities closing. Similar to Christmas, prices during Easter can reach up to double the usual rates.

Mexico has two low travel seasons: May to June, and September through November. If you're hunting for great travel bargains, these months may offer the best deals for a vacation in Mexico.
In May, temperatures soar in cities like Mérida (average high of 95°F), Guadalajara (87°F), Oaxaca City (86°F), and Mexico City (79°F). Surprisingly, Cinco de Mayo isn't widely celebrated across Mexico, despite being a public holiday; the main festivities take place in Puebla, where the historic battle between the Mexican army and French forces is reenacted on May 5th.
June marks the beginning of Mexico's rainy season, which runs until November, coinciding with hurricane season. The highest likelihood of hurricanes occurs between August and October.
July and August are prime months for surfing and wildlife sightings.
Summer brings heat to nearly every corner of Mexico. The Mexican Riviera, particularly Puerto Escondido known for its legendary Mexican Pipeline, experiences excellent swells from April/May through October/November, with June to August usually seeing the largest waves.
If you're a turtle enthusiast, the best time to visit Puerto Vallarta is from July to December when numerous baby turtle releases occur at various hotels. For spotting whale sharks, these gentle giants can be seen off the coasts of Cancún and the Riviera Maya from mid-May to mid-September, with July and August being the optimal months.
While summer may not be ideal for visiting Riviera Maya or Cancún due to the sweltering heat and the prevalence of sargassum (brown seaweed) on many beaches, it also attracts vacationers from across Mexico, causing hotel prices to surge. In contrast, beaches on the Mexican Riviera remain unaffected by sargassum.

The second low season spans September to November, offering a wonderful opportunity for cultural explorations. During this time, Mexican families indulge in Chiles en Nogada (chilies in walnut sauce) to commemorate Día de la Independencia (Independence Day), celebrated with lively patriotic festivities on September 15th and 16th.
In September, Guadalajara hosts the lively International Mariachi and Charrería Festival, a colorful and delightful event spanning 10 days, featuring over 500 mariachis and the National Charro Championship, which showcases Mexico's national sport, charrería.
As hurricane season takes hold on the Yucatán Peninsula and Mexico's coastlines, many areas experience rain and limited visibility for Caribbean divers in September. However, the situation is quite different in inland Mexico.
While Mexico City may see some rain, the pleasant weather is ideal for exploring the city. October, along with November and March, ranks among the best months to visit the stunning canyon country of northwest Mexico, offering comfortable temperatures both at the canyon's base and at its peaks.
At the beginning of November, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) fills cities and towns across Mexico with parades, floats, altars, and all-night vigils. This vibrant celebration makes it one of the prime times to experience Oaxaca City.
