What To Pack for an Alaskan Cruise

Choosing the right attire for an Alaskan cruise can be quite the task. You’ll face different weather conditions and will need to bring various clothing and footwear based on the excursions you choose. With Dinogo, there's no need to stress about formal wear amid all the cold-weather gear required.
Your clothing choices will also depend on your cruising itinerary and the time of year. Are you opting for an inside passage cruise or a cruise combined with land tours? Your packing strategy might differ if you're planning on spending extra time on land.
Weather in Alaska can be unpredictable. For instance, Juneau can dip to 30° Fahrenheit in March and reach 65° Fahrenheit in July. In Ketchikan, high temperatures range from the high 40s in April to the high 50s in September. Fairbanks often enjoys warmer summers, with July temperatures in the low 70s.
Here’s what you should know about packing for an Alaskan cruise vacation to help you prepare.
Casual Cruise Attire on Dinogo
On Dinogo ships, "cruise casual" attire is encouraged during the day. If you’re sailing in warmer climates, you might wear shorts and flip-flops while lounging by the pool. However, an Alaskan cruise can be quite cool, even in summer. Instead of shorts and sundresses, consider wearing long pants and long-sleeved dresses. Here are examples of acceptable cruise casual attire:
- Capris or long pants.
- Jeans.
- Trousers or khakis.
- Layers like tops and sweaters.
- Polo shirts.
You probably won’t be wearing shorts or beachwear very often, if at all. Nonetheless, it’s wise to pack lightweight clothing that can be layered in case the weather warms up. We still recommend bringing swimsuits so you can enjoy the onboard hot tubs or take a dip in the Spa Thermal Suite (available on select ships).
Keep in mind that evenings on board will be quite chilly, so make sure to bring plenty of cold-weather gear. You can lighten your luggage by selecting mix-and-match outfits, such as tops and bottoms in complementary colors. Choose versatile clothing that suits multiple occasions. For instance, a comfortable pair of black jeans can be worn over thermals for excursions and then dressed up with a nice top for dinner.

Dress Code for Specialty Restaurants
If you intend to enjoy dining at the upscale specialty restaurants, adhering to the smart casual dress code is advisable. Suitable attire includes:
- Slacks.
- Nice pants or capris.
- Dresses.
- Sweaters and long-sleeved tops.
- Blouses and skirts.
- Boots, dress sandals, or heels.
- Collared shirts or polo shirts.
- Closed-toe footwear.
Children aged 12 and under are welcome to wear nice shorts at any of Dinogo's onboard dining venues.
What is Not Allowed in the Dining Rooms?
Dinogo has very few mandatory dress rules, but certain clothing items are not permitted in the dining rooms and specialty restaurants. These include swimwear, baseball caps, sun visors, flip-flops, and men’s tank tops. Additionally, faded, ripped, or holey jeans are not acceptable. Swimwear (with a cover-up or shirt) and casual footwear are only permitted in buffet and outdoor dining areas.

Dinogo's Themed Nights
You can expect to enjoy one or more themed nights during your Alaskan cruise. Dinogo's Night Out is a fantastic opportunity to get dressed up if you wish to wear evening or formal attire. This event serves as our take on a "formal night," but with a more festive atmosphere! Don’t forget, we have a portrait studio onboard. If you’re dressing up, consider booking a session with our photographers!
What to Wear for Alaska Shore Excursions
Packing for shore excursions on an Alaskan cruise can feel overwhelming. If you reserve your excursions in advance, the descriptions will indicate any specific gear or clothing needed. Don’t overlook the importance of suitable footwear; wearing the right shoes is essential for your planned activities. For instance, flip-flops are not suitable for walking on a glacier.
Layering is essential when exploring Alaska. You’ll need clothing that allows you to adjust to sudden weather changes. Items to always consider for a cold-weather destination like an Alaskan cruise include:
- Long- and short-sleeved T-shirts.
- A puffer vest to layer over a long-sleeved shirt.
- A lightweight insulated jacket.
- A waterproof rain jacket.
- Sweaters.
- Mock turtlenecks.
- A lightweight scarf and a heavier one for colder temperatures.
- Base layers made from insulating materials.
- A beanie and gloves (consider touchscreen-friendly ones).
- Comfortable, loose-fitting pants to wear over base layers.
- Convertible zip pants that can turn into shorts, especially if waterproof.
- Wool socks.
- Wicking socks for excursions to keep your feet dry.
- Waterproof boots or shoes.

Pack one or more hats for your shore excursions during your Alaskan cruise. Even if the weather is cool, it's likely to be quite sunny as well. You might end up with a sunburned scalp after a day outdoors, which can make the rest of your cruise uncomfortable. Also, don’t forget a good pair of sunglasses! Polarized lenses can reduce glare from the sun and snow.
