Why I spent $200 for a COVID-19 testing service to come to my hotel room

For many travelers during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, regular COVID-19 testing has become standard. Like many, I've adapted to the process of locating, scheduling, and undergoing COVID-19 tests in different locations.
Antigen tests are usually straightforward to obtain, with results available in about 15 minutes. However, certain destinations mandate a PCR test, and in many places, finding a provider who can deliver results within 24 to 48 hours can be costly or challenging.
In the past, I've turned to urgent care clinics and drive-through pharmacies when I needed a PCR test. However, these options weren't suitable when I recently required a PCR test for upcoming travel during another trip. Fortunately, I discovered a COVID-19 testing service that met my needs by ensuring results within 24 hours and sending a technician to my hotel room for sample collection.
Why I opted for a mobile COVID-19 testing service

During a work retreat in Scottsdale, Arizona, I found myself in need of a PCR test. Due to my tight schedule and the entry requirements of my destination, I required a provider that could deliver results in 48 hours or less. With no vehicle at my disposal, I faced difficulties in locating a cost-effective and convenient testing option that met my needs.
After some independent research, I discovered that the best choice was an urgent care center. However, it was a 20-minute drive from the resort, necessitating a ride-hailing service for transportation. The costs were $149 for a PCR test with average results in 24 hours or $299 for expedited results in 90 minutes.
I could have submitted an insurance claim for the $149 option, but I anticipated the filing process could be complicated and potentially unsuccessful. Considering transit time and the wait to be seen, I estimated that the entire testing experience would take at least two hours.
Before making a booking, I decided to check with the front desk at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa regarding testing alternatives. Although the hotel did not provide any testing services, the front desk attendant handed me a fact sheet for a nearby laboratory. Upon reviewing it, I discovered that for $150, I could obtain a test with results guaranteed within 24 hours, or I could opt for a mobile testing service for an additional $50, which would come directly to me.

I was frustrated about having to pay $200 for a PCR test, and unfortunately, I couldn't charge it to my room. However, I quickly determined that the mobile testing service was my best choice given my situation.
My experience with a mobile COVID-19 testing service.

After deciding to book the mobile testing service, I called the customer service number listed on the printout and was promptly connected to an agent. She recorded my destination and departure date to confirm that the lab's test would meet my requirements. Then she informed me that a technician could come to my location at my convenience, so I scheduled an appointment for Friday at 9 a.m. in my casita at the JW Marriott.
On Friday morning, right at 9 a.m., I heard a knock at my door. A technician, wearing a mask and carrying a box of testing supplies, was waiting outside. After inviting her in, she began setting up the testing materials.

She verified my destination and departure date before asking me to complete the following form.

Once I finished the form, she confirmed my email address and then proceeded to collect a nasal swab. The lab would send the results via email, and she mentioned that someone from the laboratory would also call me to confirm that I had received them once they were ready.
After taking the nasal swab, she processed my $200 payment using a mobile card reader and asked me to complete the following authorization form.

In just eight minutes, we wrapped up the entire procedure, and I earned 400 Capital One miles for the transaction by using my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.
I received an email at 12:59 a.m. on Saturday, just 15 hours and 51 minutes after the technician collected my sample. I downloaded my results in PDF format and had no trouble using them with VeriFLY or the Health Authority of Chile. Additionally, a lab representative called me Saturday morning to confirm that I had received my results.
In summary
Opting for a mobile COVID-19 testing service that comes directly to you is often not the most budget-friendly choice, especially if you require rapid results from a PCR test. However, the entire process—from booking to the quick eight-minute appointment—was simple and efficient. Therefore, in certain circumstances, using a mobile testing service might be worthwhile, even if it isn't the cheapest option.
Mobile testing services are especially useful when you're traveling and lack access to a vehicle. Additionally, some of these services might even handle insurance claims on your behalf. For instance, in New York City, you can book a same-day PCR test through Welz with no upfront costs, though you may have to wait up to 72 hours for your results.
