Your complete guide to selecting the ideal airport in Beijing

The capital of China is served by two primary airports: Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) and Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). I've experienced both during my time in Beijing and appreciate them for unique reasons. Continue reading to discover all you need to know about these airports and how to make the best choice between them.

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is an architectural wonder that deserves admiration. Designed by the acclaimed firm Foster & Partners, the terminal resembles a dragon and was built for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Location

Situated approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown, this is Asia's busiest airport. It's just a 20-minute drive from Beijing, making it a convenient choice for arrivals and departures. I typically prefer this airport for my hotel-organized car services due to its proximity compared to the other option.

How to get there?

You can take a taxi, rideshare, or car service, which usually takes about 20 minutes, though traffic can extend this time. It's quite affordable as well. However, I believe the best option is the Airport Express Train linking PEK to Beijing's city center.

The train operates between airport terminals 2 and 3 and the Dongzhimen subway station, costing very little and taking under 40 minutes. From there, the subway provides easy access to your destination. Additionally, at least 18 bus routes depart from various city points, including Beijing Railway Station (around 30 minutes), operating from 7 am to about 9 pm.

Terminals

Beijing Capital International Airport features three interconnected terminals, accessible via a shuttle bus. Terminal 2 accommodates many SkyTeam airlines along with Hainan Airlines. Terminal 3 caters to Air China, Star Alliance, and Oneworld members, with some exceptions. Terminal 1 has been renovated and is now integrated with Terminal 2, connected by a short walkway.

Amenities

Terminal 3 truly shines. It's a haven of fine dining, and having spent ample time here, I’m always impressed by its efficiency. Terminal 3 resembles a luxury hotel, offering everything from mailing postcards to enjoying gourmet meals and relaxing in cozy seating areas. If you find yourself with time to spare, whether due to a layover or a delay, this airport is among the best places to be.

The lounges at the airport provide a peaceful environment to work, featuring comfortable lounge chairs and unique dining options infused with Cantonese cuisine. The top lounge is the Air China Business Class lounge located in Terminal 3 E.

The airport offers Wi-Fi, but you'll need a code and to verify your passport; also, be aware that the connection isn’t secure.

Distinctive Features

One of the standout features of this airport is its promise that your luggage will be available within five minutes of the aircraft being unloaded. If you're planning to travel throughout China, you'll also find luggage storage facilities in the terminals.

Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX)

Known as “the starfish” due to its five-armed terminal design, this modern airport in Beijing was created by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid and opened its doors in 2019. With its stunning architecture, it’s truly impressive. It features advanced technology, including facial recognition, making customs and security checks faster than at most airports around the globe.

Location

Beijing Daxing International Airport is situated approximately 29 miles from downtown Beijing. Thanks to its excellent connectivity, I've frequently used this airport for my travels across Asia. It's conveniently located outside the busy traffic zones of Beijing, making it easily accessible from other regions.

How to get there?

Navigating this cutting-edge airport is straightforward, with clear signage available in English. The quickest way to reach the airport—and my personal favorite for its speed—is the New Daxing Airport Express Line. It travels from Caoqiao Station to the airport in just 19 minutes at a very reasonable fare.

Naturally, taxis and car services (which can be arranged through your hotel) are also options, along with rideshare services. However, these methods typically take a bit over an hour, and in heavy traffic, it might add an extra 30 minutes to your journey.

Terminals

Daxing Airport features a single, massive terminal, recognized as the largest standalone terminal building in the world. It boasts seven levels—five above ground and two below. Thanks to its octopus-like design, walking between different sections never takes more than eight minutes, making it user-friendly for all types of travelers.

The terminal features several outdoor terraces that provide a pleasant escape, depending on the day’s air quality. Most of Skyteam's airlines operate from here, along with United Airlines and Air China, although flight schedules may vary, so it’s wise to check when booking your trip.

Amenities

Being a new airport, Daxing is equipped with every amenity imaginable. They're continually enhancing the experience with new features and special events, so it's something to consider when traveling through. Having spent considerable time here, I can confidently say it’s a delightful place to be.

First, there are various lounge options available (many accepting Priority Pass). My personal favorite is the China Eastern Airlines V5 Lounge on the fourth floor, just after security—keep an eye out for some cozy, secluded spots that offer privacy. Be aware that the lounges can be quite busy, often filled with families, as they tend to be more accessible than many in the U.S.

The airport includes an excellent yoga room situated in the international departures area on the third floor, where I've spent plenty of time relaxing. Additionally, the Aerotel terminal hotel is conveniently just a five-minute walk from the check-in desks. The rooms are compact but equipped with large TVs. There's also a fitness center, and I've had the pleasure of meeting many interesting people in their game room, which is definitely worth checking out.

Unique features

One of the standout offerings of this airport is its 144-hour visa program. It allows travelers from 53 selected countries to visit Beijing (as well as Tianjin and Hebei) without a visa. However, stays are limited to 144 hours, and travelers must have a confirmed onward flight. The best part is that you can complete the necessary paperwork upon arrival.

The airport places a strong emphasis on providing English assistance, and their ambassador program is readily available to help with any immediate needs you might have.
