The staff is very helpful & friendly, they are always there to answer your questions with a smile. The food is 10/10 & there are some great breakfast/lunch options (very nice to have some good bread & i loooves the toasted muesli). You can swim in the lake from here which is very refreshing! The location is very relaxing, although the neighbouring hotel can be a bit noisy if they have some guests (on one day they were making loud noisd at 6 am, but it only happend one time) & of course this guesthouse cannot do anything about this.Rooms are clean & there is soap/shampoo + toiletpaper. We spend 3 amazing nights here & would have stayed longer if we did not had to catch a flight.

We spent a couple of days in Romlan and we really liked the experience. We hired a driver who gave us the guesthouse called Hasibuan and it was a 10. He picked us up at the airport and took us to Parapat. We really liked the way he drove, very professional and calm. He also took us to Ketambe and we decided to hire him again to take us back to the airport. Without him the experience in Sumatra would not have been the same. Thank you Romlan for the service and Hasibuan for all the trips 😊

Let‘s start with the positive: we stayed at the far end of the hotel area, in a traditional Batak house. the view from there was amazing overlooking the lake. you didn‘t hear any noise from reception and at times it felt like you were completely alone on the peninsula. the restaurant offers a great range of meals, from Indonesian to Western, and they play good music! the location of the hotel is great, you can reach great restaurants for lunch by foot. Now onto the less positive…:- we couldn‘t really figure out why, but we didn‘t feel welcome from the very beginning. somehow we got the impression, that the staff treated us differently than other guests. for example, they helped other guests by carrying their bags to their rooms. it‘s not like we would‘ve needed help, but we were confused as to why we weren‘t at least offered help. for some guests they came to their tables to take their order, whereas we always had to go up to the reception. when other guests asked to borrow the kayas, they went and helped them lift the heavy kayas into the lake, whereas we had to do it on our own and even had to specifically ask for paddles. overall they didn‘t do anything else than the absolute bare minimum and made us feel like we were some kind of burden.- we didn‘t appreciate the tone in which they spoke to us, it bordered on rude and particularly inappropriate considering the price and the amount of times we visited their restaurant.- we liked how they wouldn‘t come and unnecessarily change the sheets every day, we still would‘ve appreciated if they came and emptied the trash bin in the bathroom every once in a while, so that we wouldn‘t have had to go up to reception with our used toilet paper. additionally, the bathroom had a distinct smell of sewage, which is why we had to put the big bucket on top of the drain to at least contain the smell a little bit.- we tried to arrange a bicycle tour for our first day and they first had to go check out what they had written on the board. they suggested we book a different tour, cause they didn’t know anything about a bicycle tour… we were surprised that they didn‘t even know their own offers!- something that was sort of out of their control but nontheless annoying was the noise coming from the hotel next door, the surrounding area and the jet skis, stretching from early in the morning throughout the entire day. Romlan might consider sound-proofing the traditional houses to improve comfort. Conclusion: I‘d recommend staying at Romlan for the location, the two traditional Batak houses (especially the one to the right) and in case you‘re craving some Western food every once in a while. but don‘t go expecting any warm welcome or particularly friendly treatment. while this does not apply to all staff members, in fact there was just two ladies which were very friendly throughout, it‘s still a big disappointment when your kindness doesn‘t get reciprocated.
