It was a valuable experience staying at an important cultural property. It was a high-quality Japanese space with Hida craftsmanship applied to the earthen walls, interior decoration, and even the furniture, and I especially enjoyed spending time looking out at the courtyard garden while soaking in the cypress bath.In the morning, we had a breakfast made with ingredients from Takayama, and the quantity was just right and it was delicious. The alpine furniture chairs were very comfortable to sit on, and I could really feel the craftsmanship in the curved handrails and backrests that hug the body. The fact that there was no TV was a good thing as it allowed me to escape from everyday life and immerse myself in the space, experiencing the traditional way of life in Hida. The bedroom had a high ceiling and was spacious enough that we slept well for two days together. It was also convenient that there were toilets on both the 1st and 2nd floors. One thing I noticed is that it might be more convenient to install another trash can in the living space on the first floor, as it would save you the trouble of having to go to throw things away. Also, it would be nice to have your tablet's PASS written down somewhere in case you forget it, but I don't think anyone would be too concerned about it since it's a minor point. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Kusakabe, are very considerate and highly recommended for seasoned travelers who want to experience Hida's history, culture, and hospitality.

We finally got around to doing our photo album from our vacation in Japan during November 2023. While doing that we realized we never left a review for our amazing time at Taniya. Our two nights at Taniya were the highlight of our trip!Taniya is a beautiful and special space. It was incredibly comfortable and relaxing during our stay. The furnishings, fixtures, and materials make it a truly one of a kind place. The staff are also fantastic and provide the best customer service experience we’ve ever had while traveling. Their recommendations and assistance with reservations for restaurants always ended with an excellent meal.I would highly recommend going on one of their tours if you are staying for two nights. It was one of the best experiences of our trip and felt very personal. The adjacent museum is also wonderful. If our travels ever lead us back to Takayama we will be sure to return to Taniya!

My husband and I spent a month in Japan, and the time spent at Taniya, was by far, the best part of our trip. It is a special spot, and the owners are beyond generous, kind, & attentive. The beautiful breakfasts Nobuko created for us were fantastic. They delivered us each night to our dinner reservation, and opened their museum to us after hours. The home is wonderful and located in the historic area of Takayama, so meandering by foot is easy. Luxurious exclusivity, total privacy, spaciousness, while authentically Japanese, makes duplicating a stay here close to impossible! We consider ourselves blessed and don't normally leave reviews, but made an exception this time!

The most exceptional stay I've had in Japan in many years of travelling to my favourite country to visit as a tourist.Couldn't recommend it more! Our hosts Nobuko, Masaru, and Mahiro couldn't have been more wonderful, and they spoke excellent English so there was virtually no language barrier. The accommodation itself was incredible, spotlessly well-kept and very tastefully and thoughtfully designed with modern elements while highlighting its extraordinarily rich history. The meals from the head chefs of Bandai Kadomise and Hisadaya were among the most amazing dining experiences I've ever had -- a big thank you to them!Thank you so much Nobuko, Masaru, and Mahiro for the most wonderful experience staying at Taniya!

It was a privilege to have stayed at Taniya, a national designated important cultural property of Takayama. From the moment we stepped into the elegantly remodelled historic house, we received the warmest hospitality from Nobuko, Masaru-san and Mahiro. They have gone above and beyond to ensure we had everything we neededl and more for an exceptional experience. The stylishly designed rooms were very comfortable and made us feel like we’re in a home away from home.We also thoroughly enjoyed the specially arranged dinners and breakfast was real treat.Thank you Nobuko for personally guiding us through a tour of your Kusakabe’s ancestral home. We learnt so much about the heritage and culture of Hida Takayama as well as got a glimpse into the linteresting lives of the Kusakabe ancestry. We hope to be back again to Taniya and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and luxurious stay with impeccable service and amazing food.

We travelled as a family and were blown away by the amazing experience of staying at this accomodation. This is a luxury traditional house - far superior to any 5 star hotel. Apart from the beautiful, architecturally renovated house with all the fittings you could ever need, what really made this stay was the amazing hospitality provided by Mahiro & Nobuko. We were spoilt by both of them. Everything from organising special birthday Wagashi, restaurant bookings, daily recommendations and amazing breakfasts every morning. They were so kind to our family and our children. We would love to stay again and highly recommend this place as a luxury, premium stay. Thank you for looking after us so well 🙂
