Takyo Abeke is a very special place, but it is not for everyone. Tomi Matsuba and her husband purchased the former Samurai house (more than 225 years old) with the goal of providing respite that shows appreciation for the imperfect, the …

A living space to experience and discoverI am happy I found this place. Entering my room on the first evening was quite amazing: it immediately made me felt at home, or rather, it felt as if being welcomed back home after returning from a long and tiring journey. Everything was still exactly where I must had left it but had forgotten about. Transformative.Dating back to 1789 or so and lovingly restored using traditional techniques, this in gives a glimpse of how people (samurai and commoners) used to live but with a contemporary outlook. It's a place where things past have gathered in an atmosphere that is warm, authentic and of practical use today. It's a glimpse from an authentic past back into the future. The interior shows an outstanding sense of aesthetics. Nothing is random. Everything has its place, feels natural, is imbued with meaning and practical purpose, and all is whispering its own (his)story. Certainly wabi (with a pinch of sabi) and full of mono no aware.I used the inn to explore Omori and other nearby places as I knew a delicious dinner and breakfast would await me every day. What I got on top was the invitation to rest, relax, remember, experience and discover. And even though I was only there for a short time, it wasn't really me and my self who stayed at the inn -- it's the inn that stays with(in) me.

I have the impression that the old folk house has evolved into a new space thanks to Tomi's ideas. They taught me that spending each day valuing the sunny days rather than the sunny ones is the key to a rich life. The food is full of pesticides and you can feel the difference from food that is full of additives due to the emphasis on efficiency. The vessels were carefully selected by Tomi, who has a deep understanding of folk crafts. It has a good taste.Shelves used in a refurbished school. This was the first time I realized that a product can have so much flavor depending on how it is used.Tea flowers were blooming in the courtyard. It was a place where you could feel that every corner of your life was taken care of.
