Yodo—our host and the monk at the temple—was warm, hospitable, and generous. We enjoyed the meditation practice and would like to return someday. This was a great opportunity to learn something about Zen and Japanese life. …

I have enjoyed my 5 nights stay in Yodo's guesthouse. I wish I stayed longer. I have learned a lot about Zen Buddhism and Japanese culture. It was a very unique and meaningful experience. I absolutely love the peaceful environment as it inspires you to read a lot and reflect about life. It was a nice balance of being with just yourself and interacting with others. Yodo puts a lot of effort in taking care of the guests and would answer any questions we have.We also had a great time with his wife, Keiko. Her energy and positivity was contagious.I hope to be back soon!!

Absolutely beyond impressed! 🥰✨ Yudu and his family are incredible! This was my first introduction to Zen Buddhism, and it definitely won't be my last. I spent 10 amazing nights at this retreat, perfectly balanced with daily activities and free time. The home-cooked Japanese meals were phenomenal! 🍱🥢 I know I'll return to Japan one day, and I'll absolutely come back to this retreat house. Thank you, Yudu and Keiko, for an unforgettable experience! 😊🩵

I had an incredible time at this retreat and would recommend it to anyone interested in exploring the area + zen Buddhist meditation practice. The accommodations, food, activities offered, and overall experience was 10/10!This retreat reminded me of the importance of staying present in each moment. I am encouraged to shift my western mindset from an individual approach and let go of attachments. “There is no separation” and I once again feel myself as part of the divine whole. I am at peace and grateful for life exactly as it is.

Very nice quiet place. Suitable for meditation. Yodo and his family were extremely helpful and welcoming. The best place for anyone who wants to attend a (not too strict) meditation retreat and learn a lot about Japanese culture. The activities were great: calligraphy, tea ceremony, Jōdō, Japanese cooking and temple rituals 😀

I really enjoyed my stay at Beppu Zen Retreat. There was a mix of temple work and cultural activities to do. The meditation is hard, but that's because I am very new to it. My favourite part was trying my hands on calligraphy! …

I was hosted by Yodo for 5 nights. It was a great experience, learning about the Japanese culture, zen meditation, and having many interesting conversations with Yodo. The stay offers a change in the perspective that is so often needed. I hope I will return.

I had one of the best, if not the best, experiences of my life staying at Yodo’s guest house and attending the retreat for 10 nights. The best part about the retreat is Yodo and his family. It really felt like we were guests at their house and not just people they were providing a service to. When I got a little sick one day from the cold and had to leave the meditation early, Yodo sent his wife, Keiko, to check on me.I don’t know how he does it, but Yodo is very patient with the guest’s dozens, if not hundreds, of questions a day about Zen, Japanese culture and his personal life all of which he answers with enthusiasm. The temple is beautiful and a great place to find peace. The activities (I.e. calligraphy, Jodo, tea ceremony) were very traditional and educational and are probably hard to find in such an authentic manner elsewhere. The food was consistently delicious and the Japanese dinner feasts were the highlight. Yodo went out of his way to accommodate to our groups’ many and particular dietary restrictions.Yodo’s retreat allows you to experience Japanese and Zen culture from the inside rather than an observer looking at it from the outside.I would recommend this retreat to anyone who wants to learn about Japanese culture and practice Zen Buddhism and get a break with a very hospitable family. I felt lucky to have been able to attend the retreat and am already looking for a time to return.
