Full of Showa retro feel. Maybe old is good? The hot springs are a little lukewarm, the food is delicious, and you can spend a quiet and relaxing time.

(October 2023)Unzenya is a great place to stay in Okutama, especially for hikers. Our group of 4 stayed there during a 2-day trip doing the Otama trail (which passes by Unzenya) and the Mukashimichi. It is only 3 minutes on foot from Hatonosu Station. The room was spacious and clean and the futon were comfortable. There were yukata in the closet so no need to bring pajamas. There was even a small table with free green tea and hot water. Some of the shared spaces were a little dusty but otherwise clean, with many sinks at which to brush your teeth. Bath tax was 100yen per person. The onsen can fit about 1-4 people and feels great. The showers in the onsen are difficult to adjust so I recommend mixing hot and cold water in the provided tub to get a good temperature. Shampoo and body soap are provided. Breakfast in the morning was traditional yakisakana with pickles, unlimited rice, egg, miso soup and flavoured nori. It was excellent bang for our buck (cospa). I would definitely stay at Unzenya again!(September 2024)Edit: I did stay at Unzenya again a year later. We got a different room, equally as comfortable. Although there is no kettle in the room, you can request a new pot of hot water at any time, which we used to make instant coffee and tea. When the weather allows, you can hang wet clothes and towels on the balcony. Our hosts had also put handy maps for nearby hiking trails and sightseeing spots at the front desk. The aircon works well. I'm excited to stay here again next time.

I took my one and a half year old child with me for an overnight stay. The canned goods bar inside the inn was very nice. All of the alcoholic beverages they served, mainly shochu, were really delicious and rare. They also provided children's chairs that fit the table, so I could eat with my children. I wonder how many different types of canned food there are, and there are so many interesting things that I never get bored. When my child fell asleep, they took out the crib and I was able to relax while watching the baby next to him.The bath was lukewarm water boiled from mineral springs, and I took a relaxing bath with my child. The inside of the hotel has not been renovated on purpose, and has a retro Showa era atmosphere that is very relaxing. Although it is old, everything is clean and you can see that old items are being used with care. When staying overnight without meals, I laid out my own futon, so I didn't have to worry about that. It's better to leave used items out instead of putting them away in the closet so they don't get mixed up with unused items. When I used it, there was a kotatsu in the room. In the morning, I watched TV while relaxing in the kotatsu.Highly recommended for people who don't like resort hotels, but like remote hot spring inns and spas. I am very grateful that I have not been able to go to such places since my child was born. It was an inn that made me wonder if such a place existed in Tokyo.

The host was kind and the breakfast was delicious. However, the futon was old and dirty... There was a lot of other people's hair on the pillowcase before I used it, and it was disgusting. The closet was also full of dust, and being near the river, it was humid and seemed like a breeding ground for dust mites.I couldn't sleep much because I was scared of ticks, and as expected, I was bitten by a lot of them. The ceiling of the bathroom was also covered in green mold.I think this quality remains as there are almost no competing accommodations around.I didn't want to bring dust mites home, so I put all my clothes in plastic bags, washed them at a laundromat, and sterilized them in the dryer.

The owners are very nice and friendly. Even though we arrived prior to the checkin, they helped us with the baggage. The place is of great value, with quiet cozy atmosphere, spacious Japanese style room and semi-private bath/onsen. The location is also superb for backpackers.Overall I had an enjoyable stay.
