This is one of the highlights of our trip! Our host was incredible and we had some of the best food that we ate on our several weeklong trip to Japan. The accommodations were just as excellent, in traditional style. The views were stellar from the reading nook in the house.I cannot express again, how excellent our hose was in going above and beyond with absolute incredible attention to detail throughout our entire stay.

So the best part is the owner who is literally a chef and so so so lovely. The food was outstanding, out of this world. Second best meal we had in Japan. His father was a chef and he learned from him. The view is amazing. And the owner incredible. Such a treat!

Our night at 3rd Place was by far our favorite night on the Kumano Kodo. 3rd place was easy to find, and the host, Mr. Tetsuyama, welcomed us with open arms. Our accommodation felt like a cozy, old Japanese cottage (because it was!!) Dinner and breakfast were exquisite, locally sourced and/or foraged by Mr. Tetsuyama himself. It's clear that Mr. Tetsuyama takes a lot of pride in hosting travelers along the Kumano. The bento lunch was a bit light, so we recommend bringing extra snacks for the day.If you want to feel welcomed, cozy, and refreshed in the countryside, then 3rd Place is the stop for you. 5 stars.

The cheapest room (no meal) has a squat portable toilet (dirty, dripping with rain and soggy toilet paper), an open air shower, an almost empty kitchen (not even chopsticks), no WiFi in the room, and no tea or coffee as advertised. You do have access to a better toilet and shower in the separated main building. The room itself was small but cosy with comfortable futons and a good view to relax into. We had a peaceful night of sleep. Annoyingly, the owner, who was otherwise very pleasant, said he didn’t have time to give us a lift to town when it was raining heavily in the morning. Check out is at 9am, so how he couldn’t spare the 10 minutes escapes me.This was one of the cheapest rooms in town so we didn’t expect too much, but even this was below our expectations given we paid around ¥11000.The location of the property provides a nice view, but is an additional few km walk uphill from town, which we would not have chosen in hindsight, given the bad weather we unfortunately had.
