I spent a week in the youth hostel (single room with shower and toilet) and in the end I was positively surprised by the negative reviews I had read before.Yes, the house may have gotten old at times, but everything I needed was there. The USB plug in the bed lamp made up for the lack of sockets. The bed was quite comfortable, at least I was always able to fall asleep easily after the long hikes. Facilities and cleanliness were otherwise as you would expect in a youth hostel. Functional, but ok. I didn't have any mold stains or dirt in my room. Nevertheless, it would be good if you could open the window properly to ensure the supply of fresh air and prevent mold from forming. The location of the youth hostel can be a joy and a sorrow at the same time. Depending on which direction you come from. You just have to plan for the 1.5 kilometers from the city. But you have peace and quiet in the hostel, something that I really appreciated, and you can quickly get to the hiking trails towards Torfhaus, Sankt Andreasberg or around the city to Wurmberg etc.The food, I only booked breakfast, was plentiful, there were several types of pancakes and bread, cheese, oatmeal, etc., jams, fruit, cucumber, tomatoes, coffee, tea and 'juice'. The latter was a bit very thin and for me it was the only drawback with breakfast. I was full and was able to start the day satisfied. In the foyer there is also a kettle, tea, water dispenser and a microwave so you can quickly make yourself a little something in the evening. There are also two vending machines with sweets and snacks and cold drinks. A coffee machine might make sense here. The staff was always friendly, but had a lot to do. One person was responsible for everything at once. Shortage of staff? Despite all of this, I never had the feeling that I was being disturbed when I had any questions or requests and I was always helped in a friendly and competent manner.I ultimately had a great week of vacation in the youth hostel and I'm sure it won't be the last time I'll be there.

The youth hostel is located right on the edge of the village and therefore of nature. Unfortunately, the bark beetle has significantly reduced the number of trees, but the hike along the Naturmythenpfad is still great and it is a good starting point for many excursions in the area, such as the Wurmberg, the Brocken or the Rabensteiner Stollen.Unfortunately, the building is getting old and some things could be modernized, but that didn't detract from our stay. The sanitary facilities were always clean, but the floor could be mopped more thoroughly and also the skirting boards. That didn't bother us, but it would be nice if the playroom were wiped regularly, as the children play a lot in socks and they are black after 30 minutes. But the playroom is great so that it doesn't disturb anyone at 6 in the morning when another child wakes up, and our children also enjoyed playing here. The outdoor area also offers enough space and facilities so that the children can be kept busy or keep themselves busy. The food - we had half board - was more like what you know from your childhood in the youth hostel, but it wasn't bad either. In particular, the always well-stocked salad bar was a good, fresh addition!Despite the obvious lack of staff, it was always refilled early, so that everything was always available except at the end of the meal time. A plus point here is the presence of children's chairs. You could easily improve the breakfast by offering fresh uncut fruit (it was on the first morning but not on the other 4).The self-service tea and coffee bar is an absolute plus. The coffee was always refilled upon request. There was also a fridge for guests and local drinks. Very welcoming and helpful. The staff was always very friendly and solution-oriented!We'd love to come again!

A youth hostel with staff who really make an effort. Unfortunately, I just had the feeling that there were just too few of them. Review and kitchen were usually managed by the same person. The rooms and the entire facility were clean but a bit old. The pictures on the walls certainly cost a lot (in total) and unfortunately one or two of them were already slightly scratched. A large picture at the top of the stairs, as wallpaper, would certainly arouse even more emotions. The family room and playroom were also very nicely laid out. In the end, the construction work still needs to be completed. Some new wear-resistant paint on one wall or the other and modern curtains would certainly create a better appearance just as quickly, or dark, modern ceilings in the communal showers and toilets on the upper floor. However, the food is more important. Sorry to say but you don't have gluten free, lactose and vegan first food. Breakfast: only 3 vegan spreads that I remember from the federal government and I thought to myself back then: no wonder no one is going vegan. Few vegetables and no fresh fruit. So there is only muesli or rolls with jam. Packed lunch, the bars are not vegan either. For dinner, please provide the meat separately: it can always fall apart and then be added to the vegan sauce. Most of the time the sauces (vegan pan) were very, very soft and the vegetables were no longer crunchy. Unfortunately the mashed potatoes weren't vegan and the dessert never was. This means: I can look for things from the buffet, but I still have to pay attention to what's inside and whether something else has fallen in.So food got a 2 out of 10 points for me. Only non-vegans definitely a 7 to 8 for active people and hikers as well as families who love nature, the stay is worth it - except for the dinner and its consistency (vegan alternative excluded).Thank you very much, dear team, for the effort you put in every day. It's certainly not easy to do everything with so few staff.

Very nice hostel. Nice location, nice staff. I went on a school trip there and it was really fun. The only thing was that it stinks in the rooms, especially in room number 4, and you can only open the windows by tilting them. Otherwise really nice hostel, nothing to complain about.

The youth hostel is really beautifully located. The home management is very nice and extremely helpful. That makes up for a lot.Youth hostels can do better with the food these days. But I've also seen worse. Just average. The crucial point is that the building and the outdoor area are clearly showing their age. Everything is clean, but water damage can definitely be repaired and painted over. Lamps are welcome to work. It's a shame that the regional association is leaving out so much potential here.If you hike or cycle all day anyway, this won't bother you. For everyone else: This is still a youth hostel in the classic style.

So the staff is very friendly, but rarely there. Especially in the evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. there is no one there for the vending machine with alcoholic drinks, for example. Plus, if you eat dinner 6 times, having diarrhea 6 times is not a good result! The food is rather mediocre. Taste definitely comes second here. The hygienic defects can also be identified quickly. There is an unbearable smell everywhere in the toilets and showers. In particular, the “shower” in the room smelled strongly of shit, which made showering here practically impossible. In the sink downstairs at the reception there are silverfish, which generally feel very comfortable everywhere in the house. The beds are somewhat okay, even if they are intended more for children. One of the positive things about the youth hostel is definitely the leisure activities, such as table tennis, billiards, table football and comfortable seating downstairs in front of the reception. For people with iron stomachs, staying is not a problem at all, and if you can cope well with the smell, it won't be a problem either. All in all, the stay in the youth hostel was bearable, but I am refraining from a second visit.

We stayed here for a weekend and were overall very satisfied. Our family room was clean and equipped just like you would expect from a youth hostel. The food was good and the staff was friendly and very helpful. The youth hostel is a bit older, so some things such as doors need to be repaired. But something like that doesn't bother us. We would love to come here again and again.

We stayed here with a family friend during the Bremen certificate holidays in winter 2023 and 2024. The JH is functionally furnished and the food is definitely much better than in other youth hostels. We were always full. We had nothing to complain about. The rooms can be occupied from 3 p.m. The reception doesn't open beforehand either. No problem! As a registered guest (e.g. because you arrived a little early) you can stay in the large anteroom and sit on a couch or a wooden bench and wait.
