We stopped for 1 night the day before our return to France. The hotel is extremely well located for Stansted Airport. The room was small but cozy. Very good cooking from the chef. Thanks to Victoria and Keith for their welcome.

My wife and I, and my inlaws travelled from Derbyshire and stayed at The Linden, Stansted Mountfitchet for one night on 27 Oct 2024 before a family event the next day. The establishment, rooms and service on the Sunday and Monday morning was excellent and the hotel is well positioned in Stansted. The joint owner Victoria is an excellent host, demonstrating how hospitality can be delivered; she is a role model for the staff and though we only had breakfast (also well presented and friendly staff), I understand Victoria's partner is a highly regarded chef. When we arrived mid-afternoon I went to check in and the Sunday lunches looked excellent. If you are looking for food and/or accommodation I would highly recommend considering The Linden. Booked a one night stay here for a family event. We arrived at a busy time when lunches were being served, but even so we had a friendly and efficient welcome. …

So disappointing. Poor service, rude staff and disappointing food for a large table. I will not return. Veg arrived so much later than food with staff who then proceeded to roll her eyes. Had to ask for staff repeatedly for more drinks, condiments and essentials that should have been given to use without the hint

This is the second visit to The Linden. I think it has the potential to be a really enjoyable local restaurant but hasn’t quite met its potential on either occasion. Both visits, the restaurant is very quiet. I have visited twice on Saturdays evenings. The menu has changed completely since my first visit and there are less choice. The main menu was vegetarian gnocchi or beef burgers, or the grill section is steak (as well as pork and salmon). Previously they had a proper main menu section with more choice (see other reviews references this). The steak options are limited to 8oz which are small (unless you want the tomahawk steak) and comes with a small house salad (a grilled half tomato, 2-3 half mushrooms and few leafs in honesty) and they charge extra for fries which I felt should have been included given the size of the steak and the price (£21). It was cooked to my taste (medium rare). I really enjoyed the peppercorn sauce and there was a lot provided. The beef burger was just okay (comes with chips and coleslaw). We ordered mac & cheese as a side. I didn’t think it was presented as well as it could have done and it could have been grilled so it had a crispy top and could have been cheesier (a little bland). For desert, we had brownie and it was enjoyed. The staff were friendly and checked in on us often but I felt service felt like it lacked leadership and finesse, especially for the setting and atmosphere they are trying to create (the style and décor is stylish). The wine menu was out of date and I had to go to the bar to select the wine and it wasn’t made easy to make my selection. The wine was plonked the table and I had to open myself (screw top). Last time, the server didn’t know how to use a bottle opener so we had to do it for them. The side dish didn’t come out immediately with the main meals and the way was longer than necessary. They forgot to give me a steak knife. These things should not be happening when the restaurant is so quiet and being an empty restaurant, there was only one other table. We overheard them raising issues too. The staff are all very young (college age) and there doesn’t seem to be anyone who is onsite managing or training the team. All these issues can be easily fixed with training so I wouldn’t be put off revisiting, but having seen other reviews, this seems to be a consistent problem.

I was really excited to stay here as I used to live just down the road. However, I got stuck on the A120, and when I arrived, the restaurant, bar, and reception were all closed. With a big note pinned to the door telling me a lock box code where I could find my key (me and everyone else). The room itself was dirty, towels and sheets for spotless, crisp and white. But the ledges, nooks and cranies were thick with dust and the carpet needed a clean. In the morning the breakfast was lovely and the staff friendly. However, not worth the money, in my opinion. Sorry!

Pros: Spacious, clean rooms. Excellent breakfast. Ideal location for airport and Cambridge, 600m from train station (although uphill), bus to Saffron Walden 100m. Friendly staff. Cons: the cheapest rooms (so to speak, given that they are still quite expensive) do not have a fridge, drawers and wardrobe. The attached restaurant and bar are quite expensive.
