We stayed in the Captain Oates Room for 2 nights so we could attend a wedding at Hedingham Castle and I can't recommend enough. We arrived just before 8pm and were greeted by the landlady who was very accommodating. The room was absolutely lovely and had everything we needed. Separate shower and bath, which was brilliant for my young son who prefers baths. Breakfast was beautiful the next morning. Upon opening the fridge to get milk for my cup of tea that the jug had fallen over. I informed the landlady and just as I was getting ready to leave a lovely lady knocked on the door with a fresh jug of milk and said that she would clean the fridge. When I say lovely lady, she was genuinely just the nicest person, so friendly and chatty, even advised me when I asked her if I had my fascinator on properly. Then when at home, my husband got a call, I hadn't even realised that I'd left a ring in the room, but they kept it safe for me until it could be collected. I'd definitely return and highly recommend.

A very well appointed room with lovely views across the countryside and an extremely comfortable bed. Diana's attention to detail is second to none and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our stay. We hope to have the opportunity to return in the near future.

A warm and friendly welcome from the staff and the location is very peaceful and picturesque. Diana and her team really look after you. The views from the rooms are lovely too, overlooking local farms, fields and forests. A highly recommended location and we will be returning for sure

We stayed in the Thomas Gainsborough suite & it was lovely. Had a lovely meal & the breakfast was very good too. Great place to escape to in a beautiful rural area just outside Braintree. Diana the owner as well as Amy one of the staff members were very hospitable & couldn’t do enough for you. Would recommend to friends & family.

Lovely spot for a relaxing night's stay in the Essex countryside. The room in a separate building behind the pub was great - clean, warm and very comfortable with a good shower. The evening meal and breakfast in the pub was delicious and all the staff were really friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

Really nice rooms with some great touches. Bedroom TVs are maybe a little small, but ok. Fantastic views across fields from bedroom windows. Breakfast isn't served until 8.30am, but they did accommodate at 8am when asked.

Booked this stay as a small get away and wanted something with a restaurant on site in the country side. We had dinner and breakfast in the pub which was good.Room was lovely and spacious with everything you could need. We stayed in the Captian Oates room as it has a Jacuzzi bath which was great.Lovely view of the field behind from the room.The TV has freesat, would be great to be upgraded to a smart TV perhaps eaisly with a fire TV or Google TV stick to allow for streaming.Please note the photos where taken after we had stayed so its not as neat as when we first arrived.

Room was nice. The lady who prepared the room was very friendly, chatty and helpful.We had booked dinner in the evening, which was OK. Breakfast was not. I sausage, 2:rashers of bacon, 1 dessertspoon of beans. 1 egg (I had much better breakfast at a premier inn a few days later). The cook seemed distracted.We had booked dinner the following evening. Should have thought again!Two of our guests have gluten problems. One is intolerant, one has a significant gluten allergy. This was carefully explained and we were assured this would be OK. It was not OK. Our guest with the gluten allergy was quite ill later that evening. Gluten free toast was offered in the menu as an option, but it seems likely that the toast was cooked in an electric toaster that had been used for normal bread.This is really not acceptable. Any worse and we would have needed to use the epipen!Will we return. No!

Quiet village location, perfect for a good night's rest. Lovely shower. Very helpful staff. Meals, especially breakfast were disappointing. My dinner guests clearly announced their need for gluten free... but the kitchen obviously did not understand: one of my guests had a bad attack. Kitchen had difficulty providing an adequate yeast free breakfast

We had a 3 night stay and thoroughly enjoyed it. Diana and her staff are excellent, friendly and welcoming. The room has everything you need - hairdryer, fridge with bottled water & fresh milk, a variety of teas, ground coffee & cafetiere, large soft towels, good sized bathroom with huge shower and toiletries. We ate breakfast & dinner there all 3 days and the food is delicious and plentiful. We had drinks with Diana and the locals on our last night, there may have also been dancing 😊
