I lived around the corner from the Elgano for several years and I'm ashamed to say I'd never been inside. When it came up as an affordable option for a few nights back in the city for my work, I wasn't sure what to expect. I needn't have worried as it was perfect for what I needed (solo female traveller).I walked from Central to Cathedral Road in about 20 mins and had a warm welcome when I arrived, even though it was right in the middle of the evening meal and quite busy. The gentleman who met me walked me to my door and explained everything I needed to know. He was so helpful and attentive - five star service. The accomodation was in the coach house at the back. It was cosy, quiet and had everything I needed. Great shower!I took a lovely walk through Sophia Gardens the next morning to get to my bus stop in Customhouse Street. I will definitely be booking here when I come back down to Cardiff for work in future and will book a meal next time. Importantly, I felt very safe at all times which was important to me travelling alone for the first time since the pandemic.I strongly recommend The Elgano to anyone looking for somewhere friendly, affordable and central in Cardiff. Grazie mille!

I was quite looking forward to staying and eating in the Elgano which is why I am so disappointed with it. I was on a business trip and stayed for four nights.Pros+ Friendly staff+ Large room+ Fresh smelling towels+ Tea/coffee sachets provided+ Automatic bathroom lightCons- noise (road noise which other establishments have tackled graciously on the same road so unsure why Elgano cannot, internal noise)- bathroom floor had toothpaste in the grout from whoever had stayed there before, not reassuring in terms of cleanliness- burnmarks on the carpet- bottle cap under bed (I moved my single bed beside the other for extra space, they were on wheels)- cold room (heating only on until 7pm)- lukewarm shower- Automatic bathroom light (kept turning off when i was in the shower which was slippy and had no hand rails)The noise at the Elgano was unbearable. I left the hotel to buy ear plugs. The road noise obviously cannot be controlled however other establishments on the same road have implemented means to minimise noise eg internal windows/shutters.Internal noise was horrible. The restaurant music normally was turned off at 22:00 and chairs normally were dragged around below followed by a man's voice talking loudly (the nightly routine). However on my last night the music went on until 22:53 and staff were lugging chairs around below until 23:15 ish then the man began talking. It's a bit disrespectful when you know you have guests above the restaurant who are trying to relax and sleep. The room was so cold i had to sleep with fluffy pyjamas and extra hoodie layers. I come from a cold environment so I'm used to the cold which shows how chilly the room really was. It felt like the windows weren't closing properly or something but they were latched closed when i checked. The radiators were on but were only on at certain parts of the day. I even kept the curtains closed and tucked behind the radiators to keep the heat in.I didn't relax at all during my stay at the Elgano and due to the grubbiness in the room and my experience with the hotel i decided not to eat in the restaurant. I barely slept which was noticed by my colleagues. If i had booked personally i would have left - the only reason I stayed was because it was booked through work
