This is the third time I stay at The Old School House. To summarise it, I feel like I'm home. The hosts are the most hospitable, friendly, kind, and generous people I've met when I've visited the UK. …

Myself and my husband stayed at this BnB for 3 nights. What started off as a great experience ended up so awful. When we arrived at the house we were greeted by Bill. Bill was such a delightful host, he gave us such a warm welcome, showed us around the house, our room, and explained how the breakfast is run. On our first day there we just hit it off with Bill, between us checking in and going about our business and coming back late in the night, we must have conversed for a total of 4+ hrs. Bill is such an intelligent, widely read, worldly and a very interesting man. We spoke about a wide range of topics and the conversation was just flowing. On the first night when we enquired about breakfast, Bill let us know that he is responsible for cooking it, and he only needs advance notice if he is doing a full English breakfast. On the second night, I informed him that I was not having breakfast the following morning, however my husband said he would be. As they were discussing times, Bill said he didn’t mind whatever time, and he would prefer if my husband has his breakfast late in the morning so that he can have a bit of a lie in. All this was mutually and respectfully agreed between themselves just before we all parted ways to go to sleep. What we didn’t realise is how annoyed the following morning Carolyn, the wife of Bill would be by all this arrangement. She was so annoyed that she left my husband eating his breakfast and chatting to Bill and came to our room to inform me to inform my husband about the breakfast schedule. I am certain she was aware of how absurd her request was but it felt like she was trying to send a message. The tone and sound of her voice just made me so uncomfortable. When I informed her that the breakfast arrangement was Bill’s idea, she just said, ‘yeah obviously’. Why was she taking her frustration on me, I hadn’t left the room nor been in the kitchen at all that morning. When I later went to the kitchen I found my husband and Bill just chatting away and having a wonderful time. When I did make it to the kitchen, she couldn’t help but inform me of how much she loves the other guests because they just come and sleep and leave early in the morning, leaving her and Bill to go about their day. We would have done the same except that when we talked about how we work from home on the first night, Bill welcomed us to work in his summer house and around the house if we wanted. The invite felt very genuine and for the first 2 mornings Bill treated us with kindness and respect. Sometimes it was so hard to leave because of how much the three of us were talking. At another point, Carolyn was also annoyed with my husband when he walked through their living room to get to the kitchen. Bill had taken us through the living room as part of the house tour but he had not informed us not to use that route but only to reach the kitchen by going outside. Again my husband described this encounter with Carolyn as being very uncomfortable. He felt she was rude. When it came to us, it appeared as though Bill and Carolyn had a very different understanding of what rules should be applied to us as guests. Bill treated us like his own friends, he wanted to share more about their house, garden and life than Carolyn did. The problem was that Carolyn took her frustrations onto us instead of talking to Bill. Carolyn was unpleasant, unprofessional and rude. You made us uncomfortable. There is more I could say to expand on this but I am being mindful of Bill. Bill thank you and sorry for what you have to bear. Room was otherwise clean, shower in the bathroom not very good and the carpet in the bathroom though it looked clean, it didn’t give a pleasant feel.

We had a wonderful stay at the Old School house. A beautiful and unique place only a few minutes walk from the Thames Path. The rooms and facilities are very comfortable. We appreciated the thought given to make sure we were comfortable and the breakfast in the stunning conservatory was excellent.
