Very nice. I had 2 pints of Northumbrian Gold, which were certainly very enjoyable. Even better sitting with the people I had been walking with. Which, of course, made my visit very enjoyable indeed. Special, very special.

Even though price seem to be really good considering the great location I believe this place is lacking a good manager. I understand that this building is very old and I am all for it however that should not stop the owner from keeping it tidy and organised. On the day of arrival the Chef walked out so we were informed that the kitchen is closed for the day with the hope of reopening the next day. For the entire stay of total of 3 nights this place stunk like the worst chip shop that has never change the frying oil. Rooms need deep clean- some insect died on the lamp shade in the bathroom long time ago(probably not an issue as the main light did not work anyway). Mold growing on the bathtub covered with layer of silicone. One of the vintage style(all in brass) bathtub tap knobs replaced with a silver/plastic one. Wallpaper is peeling off, curtains are just filthy. Linens clean, bed mattress very soft- I know it's up to personal liking however there is soft and cheap soft. This was the second one. It's a shame as the entire place is covered in pictures from the past when I believe it was in it's glory, now it's a poor mixture of everything and nothing, getting customers purely due to location and decent price. In regards to the breakfast (included in the price of room) even though we ordered the same thing every single day it looked completely different. First day fried to the point you could not pick the bacon using cutlery, tiny portion, second day was ok, third day black pudding missed. Service dependent on the mood of the crew. I would say 2 helpful and friendly 2 completely in the wrong business.

This hotel is like walking back in time 50 years ago. It’s extremely dated. The shower fell apart and cut my leg. The shower is like a dribble of water, never seen anything so bad. Even a £10 tap shower would have done better. The floor boards are so uneven you could trip on them through the carpet. Don’t get me started on the smells. It’s beyond old. When needed help to find something the staff couldn’t care less. Really not helpful in the slightest. Highly incompetent. I wouldn’t pay £20 for the night there. DONT GO HERE

The clues were there...I popped in to see if we'd like to eat at the Blue Bell. No one about and a phone ringing...a young man rushed past me (ignored me) and answered the phone. I know, I should have just walked out. But I picked up a menu - it looked lovely. I checked the diary on the desk, very few bookings. So I went out told my family and we phoned to book a table. We were told we couldn't book at six as they were fully booked (liar). We arrived at 5.30 as requested, the place was empty. Then we were presented with a menu labled 'Sunday Lunch'. Three starters, roast dinner and three desserts. I asked if we had the wrong menu? And was told 'that's all we can offer'. Disappointing. In fairness I had a lovely bowl of soap and tasty roast beef. But we had to wait an hour between starters and main. Bearing in mind they were only offering one meal, how could it take so long? I asked for the bill, our server came to the table with the card machine but no bill. She asked me to tap my card, I did but then realised we had been overchared. The matter was corrected with a cash refund. I don't blame the staff who clearly had had no training and were being asked to woyk in poor ways. But the owner/manager needs to call Gordon Ramsey or sell up!!!

Peaceful and quiet hotel in a picturesque setting. There is a bar and a restaurant here. There is a parking lot in front of the entrance, so parking your car is not a problem.

Asked for a twin room. We are pensioners and due to aches and pains required twin room. Only one available in the Court Yard. We did not expect old BUNK BEDS (they were separated but scratched and had old paint marks. Very uncomfortable beds. My kids had beds like this 40 years ago. Carpet held together with Bodge tape. Coffee stains on radiator. No Sink plug (Chain only). Bath plug filthy dirty. Thick dust on windowsill and skirting. Brown marks on the ceiling. Wall light fitting with no light bulbs. Only one tea bag, one biscuit and one hot chocolate. (for two of us) Kettle full of old water. No where to put our luggage except the floor. Breakfast first day was delayed as Chef had gone to the shops, The table was very sticky and stained and crusted food on our table. My cooked breakfast was cold. Took 30 mins for a second breakfast. First day they said they had gluten free bread for me second day was told they don't do gluten free. Only one slice of white toast for hubby (took 20 mins to get a second piece as kitchen was busy) Second day breakfast, chef late in. We were first in at 8am took 40 mins to get breakfast. Soft poached eggs were SOLID. Asked for a replacement, was told kitchen busy cant do it until all the other breakfasts were done. Continental breakfast was a laugh. Pan o chocolate piled high and wrapped up, both days, (How long had they been there? ) Fruit a laugh, bruised bananas. Cereals but they ran out of milk as people had to use this milk for their tea and coffee. Milk jugs for table came out as we were leaving. Coffee from the bar was awful and bitter. Real ale was off. Oh and on the second day the young waiter was wearing filthy stained top and trousers.We returned from our day out at about 3.30 and our room had not been made up I eventually found a member of staff and was was told cleaner was on her own and busy, so I asked if we could have some tea bags please. Website states iron/iron board in room. Nothing. Not even a bin for used teabag and rubbish .only a bathroom bin. Very cold room even though it was hot outside.No staff around on departure.We will Never go there againVillage PUBS ARE GREAT and they told us to avoid this hotel.Not giving it a ratingNot rating for serviceI HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS AS PROOF.
