Blend Greek yogurt into Jell-O for a refreshing, creamy treat that’s perfect for summer indulgence.
As someone who has always loved Jell-O, I can't recall exactly when I first paired it with yogurt, but I do remember mixing Jell-O and yogurt together as a kid. I'd break up the Jell-O into chunks, creating a mosaic of Jell-O floating in smooth yogurt. Later, as I became more adventurous in the kitchen, I tried adding yogurt to Jell-O before setting it, and I was immediately hooked!
It's incredibly simple to create – just swap out some of the water with Greek yogurt, and you’ll have a creamy, mousse-like Jell-O dessert. Add some fresh fruit, and you’ve got a beautiful, party-ready dish. I also love how the tangy yogurt cuts through the sweetness of the Jell-O, balancing the flavor perfectly.
In this guide, I'll show you how to make layered Jell-O Greek yogurt cups. You can opt for two layers like I did, or simplify it by using a full cup of Greek yogurt for a single layer. You can experiment with any Jell-O flavor and fruit mix for endless variations.
How to Make Jell-O Yogurt Cups
Ingredients You'll Need
- 4 ramekins or glasses, about 8 ounces each
- 1 box strawberry-flavored Jell-O
- 1 cup sliced strawberries
- 1/2 cup 5% Greek yogurt
- Mixing bowl and whisk
Step 1: Mix Jell-O with hot water
Following the instructions on the box, blend the Jell-O powder with 1 cup of hot water and stir until fully dissolved.
Step 2: Add cold water and stir
This is where you’ll stray from the box instructions: Pour half of the Jell-O mixture into a measuring cup until you reach the 1/2 cup mark. Then, add 1/2 cup of cold water to make a full cup.
Step 3: Add fruit to glasses
Pour the 1 cup of Jell-O into four glasses and top with sliced strawberries. Refrigerate until the Jell-O begins to set, about 20 minutes.
Step 4: Stir in the yogurt
Whisk 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt into the remaining 1/2 cup of slightly warm Jell-O until well combined. (Avoid adding yogurt to hot Jell-O, as it may cause the yogurt to curdle.) I suggest doing this step once the Jell-O has started to set in the fridge, just before adding the yogurt layer on top.
Step 5: Add the yogurt layer
Pour the yogurt mixture over the set Jell-O layer. Place the cups in the fridge to fully set for 3 to 4 hours.
Step 6: Savor the delicious result!
Once set, the yogurt layer transforms into a light, airy mousse. It’s absolutely scrumptious and incredibly simple to make.
Tips & Ideas
- The fruit and Jell-O combinations are seemingly endless, but here are some personal favorites for combining with yogurt:
- Diced fresh mango + strawberry Jell-O
- Mandarin oranges + orange Jell-O
- Canned pineapple + pineapple Jell-O topped with whipped cream and toasted coconut chips
- If you want to double the recipe, make one box of Jell-O as directed on the box, then follow the above directions for the other box, using 1 cup hot water to dissolve the Jell-O and then adding 1 cup Greek yogurt once it has cooled slightly.
- Follow the same method to make a Jell-O yogurt pie, pouring the first entire layer over a slightly frozen graham cracker pie crust.
