Bubble and Squeak Dish

"Bubble and squeak" may sound quirky, but this traditional British recipe is full of flavor. It's a perfect dish for turning your leftovers into something tasty!
What Is Bubble and Squeak?
Bubble and squeak is a classic British fried dish made primarily with mashed potatoes and cabbage. Similar to Ireland's colcannon, it often includes leftover meats like ham or bacon. Traditionally, it was made on Mondays using leftovers from Sunday dinners or after Christmas with Boxing Day leftovers. Sometimes, it's topped with a fried egg for extra richness.
Why Is It Named Bubble and Squeak?
The term "bubble and squeak" likely refers to the sounds that the ingredients make while frying in the pan. Cabbage, being high in water content, produces "bubbling" noises as it cooks and wilts.
How to Prepare Bubble and Squeak
Below you'll find the complete instructions, but here’s a quick overview of what you can expect while preparing this bubble and squeak recipe:
1. Cook and drain the cabbage.
2. Fry the bacon and onions.
3. Combine the remaining ingredients and return the cabbage to the pan.
4. Cook until the bottom is golden, then flip and brown the other side.
How to Store Leftover Bubble and Squeak
Keep any leftover bubble and squeak in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave. You can also freeze it for up to one month. To reheat, thaw in the fridge overnight and then cook on the stove.
