Don’t Keep Your Potatoes Next to This Popular Fall Fruit
There’s nothing worse than buying fresh produce only to see it spoil before you can use it. That’s why proper storage is key—and it turns out two of fall’s favorite ingredients should be stored apart.
What Happens When Apples and Potatoes Are Stored Together?
Both apples and potatoes release a gas called ethylene, which accelerates ripening and can cause your potatoes to sprout. Since both fruits and vegetables absorb gases, keeping them together will likely lead to both spoiling prematurely.
As a general guideline, keep ethylene-producing fruits and vegetables away from each other. This also applies to onions, which, like potatoes, are kitchen staples and often stored together by mistake.
How to Store Potatoes Properly
Keep potatoes in a cool, dry, and dark spot, such as a pantry or cupboard. Be sure to keep them away from heat sources like ovens or stovetops. If you have an empty cardboard box or large container, place your potatoes inside. Store them somewhere out of sight and away from other fruits and vegetables.
By following these storage tips, you'll extend the shelf life of your potatoes significantly.
How to Store Apples for Freshness
Apples should be stored in the refrigerator to maintain their freshness for as long as possible.
“The best temperature for storing apples is between 30 and 35 degrees F, with around 90 percent humidity,” says Melanic Fincher. “That’s why the crisper drawer in your fridge is the perfect spot, away from other produce that could release gases and speed up ripening.”
If you don’t have enough space in your fridge, find the coolest spot available and store apples there on their own.
