Easy Tomato Soup

2 (28 ounce) cans whole peeled tomatoes

1 cup water

1 tablespoon sugar

¼ teaspoon celery seed

¼ teaspoon dried oregano

1 pinch red pepper flakes

salt and ground black pepper to taste

Prepare all your ingredients.

Melt butter and olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Sauté onions and garlic until the onions become soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add tomatoes, water, sugar, celery seed, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and let it simmer for 15 minutes.

Remove from heat and blend with an immersion blender until smooth. Reheat the soup and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

Chef's Tip
For the best flavor, use Italian San Marzano tomatoes. Feel free to add cream if you prefer, but my family enjoys it just as it is.
This soup can easily be made vegan by using margarine or olive oil in place of butter.
