Experts Share the Easiest Way to Keep Ice Cream From Developing Ice Crystals
Have you ever thought about how you store your ice cream? There are essential tips on keeping your frozen treat fresh, as recommended by the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA).
The Ideal Method for Storing Ice Cream
The IDFA suggests a surprisingly effective way to preserve your ice cream after opening: Press a sheet of waxed paper or plastic wrap directly onto the surface before sealing the container tightly and placing it back in the freezer. This simple step helps prevent ice crystals from forming.
For extra protection, especially if you're storing ice cream long-term in a deep freezer, the IDFA recommends placing the ice cream container inside a large resealable plastic bag. Be sure to remove any excess air to prevent freezer burn.
Additional tips include storing ice cream as far back in the freezer as possible—away from the door where temperatures fluctuate. Also, avoid placing it next to uncovered foods, as it can absorb their flavors. Even packaged foods with strong odors, like frozen fish sticks, garlic pasta sauce, or pesto cubes, can leave behind unpleasant smells.
And never let ice cream thaw and refreeze multiple times. The IDFA warns that when small ice crystals melt and refreeze, they can become large, undesirable lumps. And trust us, no one wants that kind of ice cream!
