Stir in the tomato sauce, sugar, garlic salt, and regular salt with the ground beef. Simmer for about 20 minutes until the flavors have melded. Remove from heat and cover the skillet.

While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook the egg noodles in the boiling water, stirring occasionally until al dente, about 7 to 9 minutes. Drain well.
As the egg noodles cook, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
In a bowl, combine sour cream, cream cheese, and onion.

Spread half of the egg noodles in the prepared casserole dish. Layer with half of the sour cream mixture, followed by half of the ground beef mixture. Repeat the layers once more. Top with a generous sprinkle of Cheddar cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 25 to 30 minutes.

Chef's Tip
I prefer to add the diced onion along with the cheese before baking, but you can also sauté it with the beef if you prefer.
