Ingredients List
-
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
-
½ cup finely chopped onion
-
½ cup finely chopped celery
-
¼ cup finely chopped green pepper
-
1 cup Heinz tomato ketchup
-
1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
-
1 cup soft, fresh bread crumbs
-
1 large egg, slightly beaten
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
¼ teaspoon pepper
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Lightly grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
-
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, celery, and green pepper and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in ketchup to create a sauce. Remove from heat.
-
In a large bowl, combine half of the sauce with ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper; mix gently. Shape the mixture into a loaf and transfer it to the prepared pan.
-
Bake in the preheated oven until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C), about 1 hour. Remove from the oven and allow it to rest.
-
While the meatloaf rests, reheat the remaining sauce over medium heat. Slice the meatloaf and serve with the warm sauce.
Variations:
Variation 1: Add a cheesy flair by topping your meatloaf with 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella or Cheddar cheese.
Variation 2: For a quick meal with leftovers, serve slices of warm meatloaf on toasted Kaiser rolls with a drizzle of chili sauce.
Variation 3: Boost the fiber content by swapping regular breadcrumbs with whole wheat crumbs or crushed bran flakes.
Variation 4: Give it a Mexican spin by replacing ketchup with Heinz Chili Sauce and stirring 1 tablespoon of chili powder into the sauce mix.
Variation 5: For an extra spicy kick, swap out half of the regular ketchup with Heinz Hot & Spicy Ketchup.
Variation 6: For a smoky barbecue flavor, replace the ketchup with Heinz Western Grill BBQ Sauce or your favorite barbecue sauce.
