How Pitmaster Dakari Akorede Connects People Over the Grill in Atlanta
Although Atlanta, Georgia, isn't Dinogo Allstar Dakari Akorede's birthplace, you'd never guess that by attending one of his legendary backyard cookouts. At his gatherings, guests come and go freely, stepping into his home as if they were family. And there’s Akorede, at the grill, making sure everyone feels right at home.

Although Dakari Akorede and his wife, Tia, have only been in their new Atlanta home for two years, they made the move after Hurricane Ida struck New Orleans in 2021, where Tia had been finishing school. With safety for their family in mind, they sought a place free from the frequent storms of Texas, and Atlanta felt like the perfect fit. 'It came down to a choice between Texas and Atlanta,' Akorede recalls. 'Texas has hurricanes, Atlanta doesn't, so it was an easy decision.' The couple moved to Atlanta, not knowing a single soul in the city.
In just a short period, Akorede has carved out a place for himself in the BBQ world. His signature Texas-style BBQ blends influences from his Chicago upbringing and Creole flavors from his time in New Orleans. His home serves as a hub for everything from raising his son to hosting friends and running his event catering business, Chicageaux BBQ Company. 'It was essential to have a space that could do it all,' he explains. 'One day, this will be just a home again, but for now, it serves many purposes.'

Last autumn, Akorede turned his attention to his backyard. When he and his family first moved in, it was just bare earth, but now it’s the ideal spot for cookouts. 'I designed the backyard around my grill,' he says. After adding turf and pouring a new concrete slab for his custom 250-gallon grill, Akorede is eager to share the fruits of his work by serving up delicious meals for his loved ones this summer.
We sat down with Akorede to discuss grilling, his new home, and the sense of community that thrives around the grill.
Is Atlanta your permanent home now?
It’s hard to say. Texas has always held a special place in my heart, and I feel a deep connection there. But for now, I don’t see us leaving Atlanta anytime soon. This city has really embraced me, and I’m thankful for it every day. My network here keeps me grounded and pushes me to be my best—whether as a father or a pitmaster. We even have a saying in our friend group: 'No one cares; work harder.' The accountability I get from my community is something I truly value.

What is it about grilling that you love so much?
What I love most about BBQ is its power to bring people together and build community. BBQ offers a space for everyone, regardless of cultural background, ethnicity, or upbringing. It’s about gathering around a grill with great food, good company, and a few cold drinks. To me, that experience means more than fame or fortune.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I’m really excited about using my new grill. I spent all fall getting my backyard ready for summer and football season, so I’m eager to finally enjoy it.
Tell me about your grill!
It took 10 weeks to build and was made in Texas. I just received it last week, and this is only the second time I’ve cooked on it. The grill is a 250-gallon pit, capable of feeding around 500 people. Its size and efficiency were specifically designed to meet the needs of my growing business. I know it's a bit much for a home backyard, but I cook on it five days a week, even if it’s just for my family.

How do you set the tone for the party?
The food is key to setting the vibe. Hamburgers and hot dogs create a different atmosphere than chicken glazed with sauce. I make sure the menu matches the mood of the event.
What’s your idea of the perfect BBQ plate?
Don’t get me wrong, the meat is crucial, but if the sides aren’t on point, we’ve got a problem. You’ve got to have the classics: mac and cheese, coleslaw, potato salad, and baked beans. Those four are the heart of the BBQ spread and they balance the meat perfectly.
Do you have a dish you always bring to a potluck?
Without a doubt: beef ribs. It’s like brisket on a stick, and it’s one of the most incredible bites of BBQ you’ll ever have. That bite? A total game changer.

Do you have a top destination on your bucket list?
Australia. The Aussie BBQ culture fascinates me, and I’d love to explore that part of the world, learn from it, and enjoy some authentic cooking.
What’s inspiring you this summer?
My son Dylan is my constant source of motivation. The patience he has taught me is beyond measure. I want him to grow up surrounded by this level of cooking, and while I don’t know what I’ll leave him as a father, I do know he’ll be a grilling expert by the time I’m done. That’s something I’m proud of. Overall, I’m calling summer 2024 the summer of growth. I’m excited for what lies ahead.
