TikTokers Are Making Skillet Upside Down Pizza — But Does It Actually Taste Good?

Just when you thought you had pizza-making at home figured out, TikTok steps in to tell you: Actually, you’ve been doing it all wrong.
At least, that's what they claim.
The idea of assembling a pizza in reverse to create the ultimate inverted pie is definitely interesting. With high hopes, I decided to give the recipe a try. The best part is the recipe is flexible enough for you to choose your own toppings. Plus, it just sounded like a fun experiment.
Here's how to make TikTok's Upside Down Pizza
In a greased cast iron skillet, I arranged my raw ingredients: onions, mushrooms, olives, and salami (pepperoni was nowhere to be found). Then came a generous layer of shredded mozzarella. On top of that, I spread pizza sauce evenly, covering the whole surface with a thin layer.
Next, I added a sheet of store-bought pizza dough, rolled out thin. I drizzled it lightly with olive oil, sprinkled it with salt, pepper, and basil, and placed the skillet into a 400°F oven for 30 minutes.
At first, my upside-down pizza emerged from the oven looking bubbly and promising. But when I flipped it onto a cutting board, I was let down to find that only about 4% of the toppings (including the cheese) made it through. The dough had a crisp crust, but the trapped moisture left me with a soggy pizza, only the tomato sauce survived. My beloved cast iron skillet? It looked more like a dish of melted cheese.
All in all, I wasn't impressed. But if you add a lot more oil or butter to grease the skillet generously, maybe the toppings will stay put.
Just because this TikTok pizza hack didn’t work out doesn’t mean you should give up on upside-down pizza altogether. Try this Easy Upside-Down Pizza Casserole or these Upside-Down Pizza Pot Pies to satisfy your reverse pizza craving.
