Tofu Burger Recipe

Ingredients Needed
-
1 (12 ounce) package firm tofu, frozen for 72 hours
-
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
-
1 small onion, chopped
-
1 stalk celery, chopped
-
¼ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
-
1 large egg, beaten
-
salt and pepper to taste
-
½ cup vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
Instructions for Preparation
-
Start by bringing a large pot of water to a simmer. Keep the tofu in its package and place it in the water. Turn off the heat and let the tofu thaw for about 20 minutes.
-
Once thawed, remove the tofu from its package and transfer it to a plate. Put another plate on top and weigh it down with a 3 to 5-pound object. Press for 20 to 30 minutes, then discard the liquid that accumulates.
-
While the tofu is pressing, heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, cooking until soft and golden brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
-
Once pressed, crumble the tofu into a mixing bowl. Add the cooked onion and celery, shredded Cheddar cheese, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until combined.
-
Heat 1/4 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Scoop the tofu mixture into six equal portions and drop them into the pan. Flatten with a spatula to form patties. Cook until golden brown, about 5 to 7 minutes per side.
Cooking Tip
For a healthier alternative, bake the burgers in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes instead of frying them.
Editor's Advice
