12 Amazing Beaches in Europe
Top Beaches in Europe: France
France is an excellent destination for a beach getaway in Europe. With a coastline that spans over 3000 miles, you have a wealth of options, whether you prefer the mainland or the beautiful island of Corsica.
1. Ploumanac'h, Brittany
- Beach hotel recommendation: For stunning views and convenient beach access, consider staying at Hôtel Saint Guirec Et De La Plage.
Brittany boasts an incredible array of expansive sandy beaches perfect for sunbathing. At the heart of Brittany's coastline lies the village of Ploumanac’h. This charming seaside town features numerous hidden nooks and coves along its shores. Known as the Côte de Granit Rose, or 'Pink Granite Coast,' it gets its name from the unique pink hue of its rocks, making it an ideal retreat for the discerning traveler.
2. Palombaggia, Corsica
- Beach hotel recommendation: Indulge in massages and body treatments at Les Bergeries de Palombaggia—a luxurious 5-star haven just moments from the beach.
Renowned as one of Corsica's most stunning coastal stretches, Palombaggia can get crowded, but with its vast expanse, you're sure to find your own slice of sand for a relaxing day.
The warm Mediterranean waters around Corsica are crystal clear. Interested in snorkeling? Numerous facilities offer equipment rentals for your underwater adventures.
Top Beaches in Europe: Portugal
One of the sunniest spots in Europe, it's no wonder Portugal ranks high for beach vacations. The Algarve is a personal favorite for its endless sunshine and clear blue skies. Looking for something different? Explore the country’s dramatic northern coastline.
3. Praia dos Caneiros, Algarve
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: Hotel Casabela is just a 10-minute stroll from Caneiros Beach, and Portimão Harbor is also within walking distance.
Located a short distance from Portugal's main airport Faro, Praia dos Caneiros is a hidden treasure. Surrounded by rocks and cliffs, this beach has a secluded, cove-like feel that keeps it off the radar for many.
It's an ideal spot for a laid-back seaside getaway. You can enjoy a peaceful swim in the refreshing waters or rent sun loungers if you prefer to relax away from the sand. There’s also a stylish beach café perfect for refreshments or a leisurely lunch.
4. Praia da Adraga, Sintra
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: Arribas Sintra Hotel is centrally located, just a stone's throw from the beach, and a mere 15-minute drive from the beautiful Quinta da Regaleira castle.
Praia da Adraga is situated a 35-minute drive from Lisbon, nestled on the outskirts of the breathtaking Sintra. Known for its stunning palaces, this town offers a unique alternative for beach enthusiasts.
Though Praia da Adraga is accessible only by road, the trip is worthwhile for its expansive stretches of soft sand. You'll be treated to breathtaking views from its towering volcanic rocks and great waves for surfing enthusiasts. After working up an appetite, visit the charming fish restaurant perched on the cliff called Azenhas Do Mar.
Top Beaches in Europe: The Mediterranean
If you're considering a beach getaway in the Mediterranean, get ready to be overwhelmed with options. From the picturesque sandy beaches of Italy to the pebbled coves with crystal-clear waters in Croatia, here are a few of my top picks.
5. Spiaggia Sa Colonia, Sardinia, Italy
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: The luxurious 4-star Hotel Aquadulci is conveniently located near the beach and offers fantastic amenities, including an outdoor pool and solarium.
Yearning for a beach escape in Italy? Sardinia boasts breathtaking beaches, with stunning options found all over the island. Spiaggia Sa Colonia, located along the Costa Del Sud, features a long, wide stretch of sand, providing ample space for visitors, even during the busy summer months.
The inviting peach-colored sand is bordered by juniper trees, and there's a kiosk where you can grab drinks and snacks. Are you a nature enthusiast? If you're fortunate, you might catch a glimpse of native flamingos resting on the warm sand.
6. Podrace Beach, Brela, Croatia
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: Choose the Bluesun Hotel Soline for convenient beach access.
Situated south of Split along the stunning Dalmatian Coast, you'll discover Podrace Beach. It's just a short stroll from the charming town of Brela, making it an ideal base for your beach holiday. Podrace Beach is rarely empty, regardless of the season, but with its crystal-clear waters, excellent facilities, and a restaurant right on the sand, it’s a fantastic destination to enjoy.
Top Beaches in Europe: Greece
With its stunning islands, many steeped in legendary tales, it’s no wonder Greece boasts some of Europe’s finest beaches. These include popular sun-soaked spots with excellent amenities, as well as hidden coves that can only be reached on foot.
7. Petani Beach, Kefalonia
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: For a picturesque hillside view of the curved beach, consider staying at the Petani Bay Adults Only Hotel.
Kefalonia is one of Greece's most enchanting islands, and its beaches consistently rank among the best in Europe. Instead of the picturesque yet crowded Myrtos Beach, consider visiting Petani Beach instead.
This curved cove features the same breathtaking white pebbles and crystal-clear waters as Myrtos but is usually much more tranquil. Why not follow the locals' lead and take a swim at dusk? As the sun sets in the west, you can witness the sea transition from bright turquoise to deep navy.
8. Vai Beach, Crete
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: While you'll need a car or boat to reach Vai Beach, there are plenty of nearby hotel options. One such choice is the Castri Village Hotel in Vigla, which offers rooms with stunning ocean views.
Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, is definitely worth the trip. Its extensive coastline is dotted with stunning beaches, ranging from the pink sands of Elafonisi to the secluded Balos lagoon.
For a more accessible option that isn’t too crowded, visit Vai Beach. Located at the northeast tip of Crete, it offers a peaceful retreat for families and couples alike. Its expansive natural palm forest is one of Crete's must-see attractions, creating a tropical atmosphere. Rent sunbeds for the day and enjoy the bliss of moving between the soft sand and the serene, turquoise waters.
Top Beaches in Europe: Spain
From the sparkling shores of the Costa del Sol to the idyllic coves of the Balearic Islands, Spain boasts numerous beautiful beaches.
9. Playa de Migjorn, Formentera
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: The 4-star Insotel Hotel Formentera Playa offers a little bit of everything, featuring onsite scuba diving and windsurfing. It’s also just a few minutes away from the beach.
Formentera is the quieter, more laid-back sibling of Ibiza, with beaches that prioritize relaxation. Among them is the picture-perfect Playa de Migjorn, located on the southern coast of the island.
Playa de Migjorn is famous for its excellent amenities; you can rent a beach chair for the day and enjoy oceanfront drink service while watching others play volleyball. It’s also the longest beach in Formentera, offering ample space for everyone to enjoy its soft white sands.
10. Calo des Moro, Mallorca
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: Situated in the tranquil village of Cala Llombards, just a 15-minute walk from Calo des Moro, is the wonderful Case de la Vida.
Another Spanish island known for its stunning beaches is Mallorca. Calo des Moro was once a hidden gem but has gained popularity in recent years. Nestled in the island's serene southeastern corner and lacking facilities, it still preserves its tranquil charm.
The cove's sheltered location makes it an excellent spot for swimming. The water is relatively shallow, making it safe for children to enjoy the gentle waves. Keep in mind that access to the beach involves a steep path, so it may not be suitable for those with mobility challenges.
Top Beach Holidays in Europe: UK
The UK boasts an abundance of stunning shorelines where you can soak up the summer sun (or enjoy the off-season, if you're fortunate).
11. Watergate Bay, Newquay, UK
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: Book your stay at the highly-rated Sands Resort Hotel and Spa, conveniently located between Watergate Bay and Newquay.
Newquay is the ultimate beach escape if you find yourself in the UK this summer. Renowned and cherished by surfers, paddle-boarders, and locals alike, Watergate Bay features a vast open beach that embraces the Atlantic Ocean's waves. Its fantastic surf, rocky pools, cliffside views, and secluded setting make it an ideal UK beach for unwinding or learning to surf.
12. Traeth Llanddwyn, Anglesey, Wales
- Beach Hotel Recommendation: As the beach is part of a protected area, you won’t find any hotels within walking distance. Instead, consider the delightful Nant Yr Odyn Country House Hotel, just a short drive away in Llangefni.
The Isle of Anglesey is arguably the top spot in Wales for a beach getaway. Accessible via the Menai Bridge, this small island boasts numerous beautiful sandy beaches perfect for strolling, sunbathing, or even swimming if you're up for the chilly Irish Sea.
One of my favorites in this part of the UK is the expansive Traeth Llanddwyn. This Blue Flag beach is located on Anglesey's northern coast and is adjacent to the breathtaking Newborough National Nature Reserve, ideal for hiking. In addition to relaxing on soft sand dunes, you can also walk over to Llanddwyn Island during low tide. There, you’ll find several historic sites to discover, including a decommissioned lighthouse and the ruins of St Dwynen's Church.
