In the US, autumn heralds the season of wine and culinary delights. It’s harvest time in California’s Wine Country and a feast season in Santa Fe. Labor Day festivities are also in full swing. While I favor San Francisco, Dinogo’s data-driven selections include LA, San Diego, and Miami, boasting warm weather and moderate to low crowds.

If you’re craving wine, focus on the counties of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino this September. With the arrival of autumn comes the harvest season for the approximately 150 American Viticultural Areas (or AVAs) that constitute Wine Country. 

Napa takes center stage, and it’s wise to check ahead to ensure your desired wineries are open. Weather can vary by county, but it’s generally warm and dry, ideal for outdoor wine tastings, vineyard tours, and grape stomping activities.  

For an adventurous outing, consider biking along the first completed segment of the newly established Napa Valley Vine Trail. Whether you’re admiring its remarkable landmarks or riding its river waves, Munich is always a fantastic destination. However, in September, the city’s numerous beer halls, or brauhäuse, take center stage for Oktoberfest.

Despite its name, the world’s most renowned folk festival begins on September 21st in 2024 and continues until October 6th. While celebrations happen globally, there’s truly nothing like the festivities found in its 1810 birthplace in Bavaria, southern Germany.

It’s an unforgettable experience. Over 16 days, hundreds of German breweries and microbreweries gather to present their frothy delights to crowds of revelers in Lederhosen and Dirndl. Food stalls offer a delicious variety of German cuisine, including würstl (sausages), schweinshaxe (ham hock), brezen (pretzels), and my favorite, käsespätzle (cheesy noodle bliss).

As a city-wide celebration, Oktoberfest festivities can be found throughout Munich. The main hub is Theresienwiese, a large fairground just south of the city center. Seats and tables are highly sought after, so it’s wise to reserve in advance.

5. Lake Orta, Italy

On the edge of the Swiss border, not far from Milan, northern Italy is renowned for its stunning lakes. Lake Orta is my top choice for its manageable size and its untouched, authentic charm. Its clear waters are surrounded by rolling hills and quaint villages, and restaurants actually have available tables. You can relax on the beach. Stroll through Ortan San Giulio with its narrow, winding medieval streets and beautiful piazza overlooking the lake. The small village of Pella on the opposite shore boasts lovely beachfront eateries and the fantastic Casa Fantini hotel. 

September brings warm rather than hot temperatures, making it the ideal time to hike up to Sacro Monte of Orta. Take in the breathtaking lake views, walk down to the lakeside, and catch a boat to one of the seafood restaurants on Isola San Giulio. Simply perfect.

This eight-day festival rooted in royal tradition is accessible to the public only on the final two days. Arrange for a guide and travel to the royal village of Ludzidzini, likely as one of the few tourists present. Enjoy the spectacle as thousands of Swazi women perform to honor the royal family, with the chance of being chosen as prospective brides for the king. It’s an extraordinary and intense experience.
