15 Exciting Dining Experiences to Try in Sun Valley Today
Sun Valley, Idaho, has been a beloved getaway for adventurers and celebrities for nearly a century. In 1936, William Averell Harriman, a railway magnate, installed the world’s first ski lift, establishing Sun Valley as a top-tier ski resort. However, the entire Wood River Valley remains popular throughout the summer and nearly all year, except for a few weeks when hiking trails become muddy. Over the years, the area has attracted notable figures like Ernest Hemingway, Oprah Winfrey, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, alongside countless less famous visitors, all seeking nourishment and relaxation at restaurants in Ketchum and Hailey. Hungry adventurers can choose from upscale dining, charming long-established Mytouries, innovative Mediterranean or Southeast Asian menus, and establishments that highlight locally sourced ingredients such as trout, elk, lamb, bison, hops, potatoes, morels, and huckleberries.
Update, January 2021:
In March 2020, as COVID-19 began to spread in Idaho, Sun Valley became the center of the state’s outbreak, prompting Mayor Neil Bradshaw to advise against visitors coming to the rural area. Over the summer, restrictions successfully reduced case numbers. The state implemented the Idaho Rebound plan to gradually relax regulations from stage one to stage four, only to retract some measures in the fall when cases surged, ultimately stabilizing at a modified stage two in November.
In light of the early 2020 outbreak, Sun Valley Resort and local businesses have taken health precautions seriously, offering reassurance to skiers eager to hit the slopes. Since the resort opened for the season on Thanksgiving, social distancing measures, limited ski lift capacity, and local mask mandates have contributed to a fun and safe winter experience. This is also promising for restaurants that depend on the seasonal tourism economy. While indoor dining is permitted in Idaho with social distancing, many Mytouries are also providing takeout and comfortable outdoor dining options where feasible.
Here’s an updated list of restaurants in Sun Valley that are adapting and thriving during the pandemic.
Note: Restaurant hours and service levels may vary due to the pandemic. Each map point highlights outdoor dining and takeout options. Many restaurants in Ketchum and Hailey are open for indoor dining at reduced capacity, but this should not be interpreted as an endorsement for dining indoors. Studies show that outdoor dining has a lower exposure risk, though the safety of patio dining depends on strict adherence to social distancing and safety guidelines.
