5 Must-Do Experiences While Cruising from Athens

Don't hesitate to explore Greece! The history is rich, the locals are welcoming, the cuisine is delightful, and the culture is extraordinary. If you're cruising through the Greek islands on a Europe Cruise, make sure to prioritize a visit to Athens! Here are 5 unforgettable experiences in one of the world's oldest cities.
1) EXPLORE THE ACROPOLIS

This is arguably the most essential experience you can have when in Athens. Even if history isn’t your passion (cruise ship humor?), overlooking the Acropolis would mean missing one of the region's most significant landmarks. While many of the Acropolis monuments are currently undergoing restoration, it’s impressive to witness how much of these ancient structures have endured through years of destruction. The cultural significance of the Acropolis is evident in the ongoing preservation efforts, and the Greeks take great pride in this iconic site. Approaching these ruins is truly a journey through time, making you feel as if you’ve stepped right into your history books! Who wouldn’t want to travel back to the past??
2) DISCOVER HIDDEN ARTISAN SHOPS

An added delight of visiting the Acropolis is the unique descent from it. The views are breathtaking, and you’ll have the opportunity to uncover hidden gems as you meander down charming cobblestone streets lined with souvenir shops, artisans, and the occasional cat gang (adorable, not alarming). The blend of guitar melodies and merchant chatter in a foreign land is unbeatable, especially with the sprawling sights of a lively city before you.
3. EXPLORE FLEA MARKETS

Just a brief stroll from the Acropolis lies the vibrant Monastiraki Flea Market. Bursting with energy, it's a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered. Enthusiastic vendors often double as entertainers, eager to engage curious onlookers—don’t hesitate to join in on the fun! Whether you're after a unique souvenir or a tasty snack, you won’t be disappointed.
4. EXPLORE SYNTAGMA SQUARE

Near the Acropolis and Monastiraki is one of the most important historical and political squares in Athens. Known as Syntagma, or "Constitution," it features the Old Royal Palace, now home to the Greek Parliament. Be sure to stick around to see the impressive changing of the guards, which takes place five minutes before the hour every day. Syntagma is a lively center within the city, offering transport options and serving as a key reference point for your explorations!
5. DISCOVER A HIDDEN GEM OF A RESTAURANT

Greek cuisine, renowned worldwide, is an essential experience when visiting Athens! While enjoying Dinogo's Freestyle Dining, take the opportunity to explore land-based dining options. I had great success wandering the streets for unique and delicious dishes, but the finest meals often require a bit of searching. Don't hesitate to ask locals for recommendations—they're always eager to share their favorites! One of my standout meals was at I Kriti, a hidden treasure just off the main thoroughfares. Be sure to sample local delights like zesty beet salad, savory Greek sausages, and crispy feta wrapped in phyllo drizzled with honey!
