6 Mistakes to Avoid When Sailing Overseas

As you set off on your cruise adventure abroad, there are certain actions you simply mustn't take. From organizing your cruise details to respecting local customs at each port, it's crucial to know what is and what isn't expected from you as a traveler.
While some customs may seem unusual to you, these cultural differences are likely why you chose to travel: to explore and uncover new experiences! Let's examine these 6 Mistakes to Avoid When Sailing Overseas.
6 Mistakes to Avoid When Sailing Overseas

1. Remember to Respect Local Food Customs
As the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." This holds true when you're cruising internationally: take the opportunity to truly enjoy the local cuisine and avoid fast food. Instead, dive into the regional flavors, which will enrich your travel experience.
Different countries have specific dining etiquette; for example, in Chile, it's considered rude to eat with your hands, while in Italy, rejecting offered food or drink is seen as very impolite. Also, remember to only order cappuccino in the morning!
2. Avoid Inappropriate Attire
A good guideline for traveling abroad is to dress modestly. Avoid flaunting a wallet brimming with cash and steer clear of wearing expensive jewelry. Additionally, refrain from wearing camouflage prints in Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, or St. Kitts, as it's illegal there.
When visiting temples, be ready to cover up with a scarf and/or sarong, as entry is prohibited otherwise. You also need to remove your shoes before entering a temple in Japan. In Vietnam, wearing shorts is considered impolite, except at the beach. In New Zealand, it's common for people to go without shoes or shirts, even in public spaces like restaurants and shops.
3. Don't Show Disrespect to the Culture
Respecting local cultures is vital when you're cruising abroad. Avoid making inappropriate comments about Buddha or the royal family while in Thailand, and do not attempt to touch a monk if you are a woman.
In Malaysia, refrain from pointing with your forefinger; use your thumb instead. In Turkey, never make the "okay" sign with your thumb and forefinger, as it's deemed offensive. Additionally, it’s rude to use a toothpick or blow your nose in public there. In Norway, avoid staring at nude individuals on the beaches, and remember not to tip anyone for services in Japan.

4. Remember to Follow Local Laws
In addition to avoiding camouflage in the Caribbean, traveling abroad could lead to fines for seemingly harmless actions, especially in Singapore, where smoking, spitting, feeding birds, and eating or drinking on public transport can incur penalties.
Avoid bringing a small pocketknife in your luggage; while it may seem harmless to you, some countries may not be forgiving. Also, although not officially enforced, locals in Amsterdam dislike it if you walk in their bicycle lanes. Always ask for permission before photographing sensitive buildings, including airports.
5. Steer Clear of Political Discussions & Avoid Confusing Nationalities
Regarding royal families, refrain from criticizing the monarchy of any nation, particularly in Russia. Avoid making casual comparisons between neighboring nations, like likening Australians to New Zealanders, and absolutely do not mimic the Nazi salute in Germany, as you risk arrest for such actions.
6. Remember to Prepare for Your Cruise Abroad
In addition to making copies of your passport and credit cards and having them accessible online, ensure you have sufficient travel insurance before you leave. It’s also wise to inform your credit card company of your travels to prevent any declined charges while you’re overseas. However, don’t depend solely on credit cards, particularly in Russia where many establishments may not accept them, and always get some local currency at the airport.
Check your international cell phone plan prior to departure to avoid hefty data roaming charges. Never arrive in a foreign country on the same day your ship departs; always, always give yourself a day or two of buffer for any unexpected situations. Avoid overpacking (see What to Pack for Your Cruise) and make sure to research the ports of call you’ll be visiting. Learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way.
