7 Unexpectedly Amazing Spring Destinations
Add some excitement to your travel plans this spring. This season presents a perfect opportunity for an additional getaway before the summer vacation rush begins. Explore a few destinations that shine in that ideal time between winter and summer—some of which may catch you off guard.
We’ve curated a list of seven excellent options for a spring getaway, each with its own enticing reasons to visit.
1. New Orleans
The Big Easy can be quite a challenge during peak tourist times—not just due to the crowds but also because of the sweltering heat. However, if you visit before the summer, you can relish in comfortable, pleasant weather that makes wandering through the charming cobblestone streets a delightful experience rather than a struggle. In April, temperatures typically reach the upper 70s with only about four rainy days. The main attraction of spring in New Orleans is the Jazz Fest, where over 5,000 musicians perform at this renowned event that began in 1970 and has continued to expand in scale since.
The culture of New Orleans extends far beyond its music scene, offering various artistic reasons to visit in spring, such as the Tennessee Williams Festival. This five-day event honors the iconic author of Streetcar Named Desire, who spent several years in the city during the 1930s and 1940s. In addition to profound readings and tributes, the festival features delightfully unconventional activities like the annual Stella Shouting Contest, where participants can showcase their best impression of Stanley Kowalski’s famous bellow. For some inspiration, check out a video of last year's contestants.
Accommodation options
A standout four-star hotel located in Marigny has been ingeniously converted from a 19th-century church. Its surrounding structures, including a school and convent, along with its lavish and intricately designed interiors, create a charmingly extravagant atmosphere. The twin-bunk rooms in the former schoolhouse make for an excellent choice for families or groups of friends.
Getting to New Orleans
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) has undergone a $1.3 billion renovation over the past five years, transforming it into a pleasant experience. Most major airlines provide service across the country; for instance, Breeze Airways connects it to Louisville, Kentucky, while Southwest Airlines offers flights from San Antonio, Texas.

Walk hand in hand through ancient gardens and serene lotus ponds before heading down Sejongno to the picturesque Cheonggyecheon, where soothing waterfalls and fountains set a romantic scene. Conclude your evening with a cozy dinner at Gaon, which has been awarded three Michelin stars for its exquisite take on traditional cuisine." />Photo by Steven Moore
2. Seoul, South Korea
We’ve mentioned that the South Korean capital is one of the top cities in the world this year, but if you need further persuasion, spring is the best time to visit. This is when the city transforms into a dreamy landscape adorned with soft pink flowers, thanks to the cherry trees lining the streets and parks, typically in bloom from mid-March to mid-April. Look out for two types: the Yoshino—famous from Washington, D.C. and originally from Japan—and the King cherry, a native species from Jeju Island, South Korea. The King cherry boasts slightly larger, pinker blossoms and usually blooms towards the end of the season.
Some of the best places to experience the cherry blossoms include the National Cemetery, where the weeping branches create a stunning effect reminiscent of floral waterfalls, and Seokchon Lake, home to the Lotte World theme park. The fairy-tale architecture of the Disney Magic Castle looks especially enchanting when surrounded by cherry blossoms. Don’t forget to explore the local supermarkets for unique cherry blossom-flavored snacks—limited-edition treats crafted to celebrate the season.
Where to stay
Consider staying in a unique lodging option like one of the traditional hanoks. These iconic 14th-century structures feature elegantly curved roofs and central courtyards, embodying the essence of Seoul with their timber-framed windows and intricate calligraphic designs.

Korea boasts two national airlines: Korean Air, a member of SkyTeam, and Asiana, part of Star Alliance. Together, they provide direct flights from ICN airport to destinations like Dallas, Seattle, and JFK in New York City. Additionally, Delta offers routes to the capital from Detroit and Minneapolis.

3. Malta
This small island, located approximately 60 nautical miles off the southern coast of Sicily, enjoys pleasantly mild weather during spring—much more enjoyable than the often-sweltering midsummer heat. It also boasts countless lesser-known cultural attractions that rival those in Rome or Athens.
Consider the Hypogeum. Hidden beneath a side street in Paola lies one of Europe’s most underrated yet significant Neolithic sites: a labyrinth of tunnels hewn from limestone over 5,000 years ago. Discovered while constructing a drainage channel for a modern residence, this burial ground and temple limits entry to 80 visitors per day to safeguard the remarkable artworks on its walls from the moisture of visitors’ breath. Later this year, keep an eye out for MICAS, a contemporary art museum set to open in Valletta, featuring a glass structure attached to the ancient fortified walls of the city.
Where to stay
For a convenient stay, consider this hotel located just outside the main city walls of Valletta. It offers spacious, comfortable rooms and a charming, slightly frilly lobby that resembles an English country home more than a Mediterranean residence.
How to reach Malta
There are no direct long-haul flights from North America. Due to Malta’s historical ties with the United Kingdom—having been a colony for 150 years—the best option is to fly into London and then connect from there. Aim for LGW rather than LHR airport (JetBlue, Delta, and Virgin all service the former), as it provides a wider array of short-haul connections.

4. The Hamptons, New York
Do you think summer is the prime season to visit the Hamptons? Think again. For a more serene experience in this beautiful part of New England, plan your trip during spring when the local population exceeds visitors, making it more likely to see a line at a farm stand instead of outside a nightclub.
Currently, the highlight is the most secluded enclave in the Hamptons: Shelter Island, a nearly 30-square-mile area nestled between the north and south forks at the easternmost point. Over the past couple of years, it has experienced a surge of new vitality, with several hotels undergoing significant renovations or changes in ownership, such as the Chequit—now owned by NYC real estate mogul Stefan Soloviev—and the Rams Head Inn.
Despite these changes, Shelter Island maintains much of the rural charm that originally attracted weekend visitors: Enjoy a 10-mile bike ride around the entire island, a third of which is designated as a protected nature reserve, or relax on one of the beaches at sunset. For those wanting to brave the cool Atlantic waters, Shell Beach is ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding, thanks to the sheltered inlet at West Neck Harbor.
Where to stay
The Pridwin has recently undergone a significant transformation after the longtime owning family teamed up with developer Cape Resorts: This 10-acre estate now features 16 new cottages scattered throughout its grounds.
How to reach the Hamptons
For a more comfortable journey to Long Island, bypass the LIRR train crowds and opt for one of the luxurious bus services: The Luxury Liner begins operations in May, while the Hampton Jitney runs year-round. Expect plush seating, snacks, Wi-Fi, and regular stops connecting NYC with major hubs on the East End.

5. Costa Rica
The ideal time to discover Costa Rica is during the dry season, or summer, which spans from December to April. This period offers the clearest views of its stunning landscapes, such as the towering Arenal Volcano, which rises over 5,300 feet (be sure to rise early to avoid the clouds). It’s also when the bird population peaks, with millions migrating here for the winter. Plus, the sunny, dry weather generally keeps temperatures in the mid-80s, creating perfect beach days.
To truly immerse yourself in the jungle, make La Fortuna your home base. This area is the country's adventure capital: Traverse the thrilling, vertigo-inducing metal walkways known as the Arenal hanging bridges in Mistico Park, or zip down seven consecutive ziplines, including one that slices through the treetops. If you're looking to surf, head to Santa Teresa on the west coast, a chic hippie haven reminiscent of Mexico’s Tulum. Alternatively, find your zen in Nosara, a wellness hotspot perfect for yoga enthusiasts.
Where to stay
The eco-luxury destination is the highlight among the three sister resorts operating under the Nayara brand: Enjoy a soak in your private plunge pool outside your canopied bedroom while taking in the breathtaking views of the Arenal Volcano, the quintessential Costa Rican backdrop.
How to reach Costa Rica
The capital city, San José (SJO), is serviced by flights from Orlando (JetBlue, Spirit) and Charlotte (American), among other cities. Another major airport in Costa Rica is Liberia (LIR): From the United States, Southwest operates flights to Baltimore, while American and JetBlue offer routes to JFK.

6. Tangier, Morocco
Embark on a journey to Tangier, a city already recognized as one of the must-see destinations globally for 2024. Located at the northernmost tip of modern Morocco, Tangier boasts a fascinatingly diverse cultural heritage, having served for several decades in the 20th century as an independent international zone governed by a coalition of European nations. This unique history has endowed the city with architectural uniqueness and a daring edge that it continues to embody today—no surprise that the fashion elite of the 1970s, including Yves Saint Laurent, were so captivated by Tangier's charm and allure.
Following in their footsteps, you’ll discover that modern Tangier is a vibrant hub for local artists, including Yto Barrada, who manages the café and gallery Cinémathèque de Tanger, and the eclectic concept shop Las Chicas. Be sure to bring along a copy of the remarkable autobiography by Ahmed Errachidi, The General, to enjoy at his family-run eatery, Café Terrasse Boulevard. This Tangier native was arrested in Pakistan and held at Guantanamo Bay for five years until his innocence was established, after which he returned home to open this beloved restaurant with his family.
Accommodations
Designer Jasper Conran has transformed Yves Saint Laurent’s former residence into an opulent 12-room boutique hotel, enhancing its interiors with a bold, maximalist style.
How to reach Tangier
For travelers from North America, the most convenient route is to fly into Casablanca, the capital city that serves as the endpoint for long-haul flights; Royal Air Maroc operates flights from Washington, D.C., JFK, and Miami. From there, you can catch the brand-new high-speed train to Tangier, which takes just under two hours.
7. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Don’t think that ski resorts lose their appeal as the snow starts to dwindle. In fact, these destinations can be incredibly attractive during the off-season, as their other attractions become more prominent without the focus on skiing.
Jackson Hole is a perfect example. While winter is renowned for skiing and summer brings lively whitewater rafting, spring often gets overlooked yet is equally inviting. Although Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks may be slightly muddy, their remote beauty is even more striking in spring compared to the bustling peak seasons. Wildlife, too, is more active with fewer visitors around: Animals are eager to move after their winter dormancy, especially the bison and elk that start their migration northward for the summer.
Old West Days are a beloved tradition here each spring, taking place in late May as a celebration of the region’s Western heritage. Highlights include the High Noon Chili Cook-off featuring local restaurants and the Teton Powwow, which showcases Indigenous dances and cultural traditions.
Where to stay
The exclusive Asia-based hotel chain has launched its first property in the United States here, featuring a 40-room resort complete with a heated outdoor infinity pool that offers stunning views of the rugged landscape.
How to get to Jackson Hole
JAC airport is surprisingly well-connected, offering direct nonstop flights from various locations nationwide: United Airlines operates routes from EWR in Newark, New Jersey, and HOU in Houston, while Delta provides service from MSP (Minneapolis/Saint Paul) and SLC (Salt Lake City), and American Airlines flies in from DFW (Dallas).
Correction (January 16, 2023): The initial version of this article incorrectly stated that Villa Mabrouka has 120 rooms. The correct number is actually 12 rooms.
