A British Airways flight that was meant to go to Germany mistakenly ended up in Scotland.

On Monday morning, passengers aboard a British Airways flight from London City Airport to Dusseldorf, Germany, were taken aback when their plane unexpectedly landed in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital.
The mishap occurred due to a flight plan mix-up, causing both the pilot and crew to think the flight was headed for Edinburgh instead of Dusseldorf.
The flight was operated by WDL Aviation, a German leasing company, on behalf of British Airways' BA CityFlyer subsidiary. The error in the flight plan was made at WDL Aviation's offices in Germany.
After landing in Edinburgh, the plane took off once again and continued its journey to Dusseldorf.
Piotr Pomienski, a student at Imperial College London, shared with Dinogo that his girlfriend, Zsófia Szabó, was on the flight that mistakenly landed in Edinburgh. 'I saw on Flightradar that the flight was heading north instead of south, but I thought it was just a system glitch—until she messaged me saying they had landed in Edinburgh,' he explained.
Szabó told Dinogo she realized something was off when she spotted mountains outside the window, instead of the 'typical German industrial scenery.'
'As we began our descent and I saw some larger hills and mountains, I thought this didn’t look like the Eastern Netherlands or Western Germany,' she said. 'I figured we had taken a minor detour. But then my colleague across the aisle asked me to check Google Maps, and it showed we were near Carlisle.'
'The word spread quickly. Passengers started asking each other where they were supposed to be going—and it turned out, everyone was headed to Dusseldorf.'
'When we finally landed, there was a funny moment when the flight attendant asked passengers to raise their hands if they were heading to Dusseldorf—which turned out to be everyone on the plane,' she said.
The captain later apologized to the passengers, explaining that the plane would refuel before continuing its journey to Germany.
'Most of us found it pretty amusing,' Szabó recalled. 'People were on the phone, trying to convince everyone they had ended up in the wrong city.'
Son Tran, another passenger on the flight, told Dinogo: 'Most passengers were either sleeping or working, so nobody noticed we were off course. We only realized we were in Scotland when we started our descent and asked the crew.'
In an official statement, a British Airways spokesperson confirmed the airline was collaborating with WDL Aviation to determine why the wrong flight plan had been submitted.
'We’ve apologized to our customers for this disruption to their travel plans and will be reaching out to each of them individually,' the spokesperson added.
In a statement, WDL Aviation explained: 'We are working closely with the authorities to understand how this unfortunate mix-up in flight schedules occurred. At no point was passenger safety compromised. After the unplanned stopover in Edinburgh, we ensured the passengers on flight BA3271 were flown to Dusseldorf.'
