A comprehensive guide to the airports in Tenerife
Tenerife, the largest of Spain's distant Canary Islands, is served by two airports due to its size and population: Tenerife North (TFN) and Tenerife South (TFS).
The two airports, named after their locations, allow you to easily choose one based on your accommodation plans. However, there are additional factors to consider. As a regular visitor to Tenerife, I’ll provide all the details you need to make the best airport choice for your upcoming trip.
Tenerife North Airport (TFN)
Tenerife North Airport (TFN), previously known as Los Rodeos Airport, has been in operation for nearly 100 years, with its first flight arriving from Seville via Berlin in 1929. Situated in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, this is the smaller of Tenerife's two airports. It primarily handles flights connecting Tenerife to other Canary Islands and mainland Spain, along with a limited selection of international routes.
While not commonly used for layovers, I once had a short layover there when traveling from mainland Spain to one of the smaller Canary Islands. Both budget and traditional airlines offer flights to Tenerife North, which also serves as a hub for Binter Canarias, focusing mainly on inter-island flights.
Location and access
Tenerife North Airport is approximately 7 miles from Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife. The most convenient way to reach it is by car, as public transport options are limited. There is a Titsa bus service, line 20, that operates from Santa Cruz and costs just a couple of euros each way.
On the island, buses are referred to as “guaguas” instead of “autobuses” as in mainland Spain. However, be aware that bus schedules in Tenerife often operate on “island time.” For a more reliable arrival at the airport, I recommend taking a taxi or renting a car to ensure you arrive early.
Terminals and facilities
I appreciate flying to and from Tenerife North due to its manageable size and easy navigation. The airport features a single terminal, eliminating the stress of locating your flight’s departure point.
Though it has only one terminal, the airport feels spacious and well-lit. I particularly like that there’s a kids' play area for my toddler to expend some energy before our flight. Additionally, the terminal includes a pharmacy and shops like Ale-Hop, Sunglass Hut, and Tenerife Duty Free, where you can find local products such as aloe vera and wine.
The airport offers a variety of dining choices. You can enjoy fast food at Burger King, grab a sandwich at Panaria, or indulge in coffee and tapas at Cafe y Tapas.
Important information
If you need internet access, Wi-Fi is available for free, but you'll need to register and provide an email address to connect.
I frequently rent vehicles at TFN airport; it's straightforward and convenient, with all the major rental companies present, including Hertz, Avis, and Budget.
Tenerife South Airport (TFS)
True to its name, Tenerife South Airport (TFS) (also known as Tenerife Sur) is situated in the southern part of the island and is the largest airport in Tenerife.
This airport handles a substantial number of international flights, catering primarily to many European nations, particularly Germany and the UK. Notably, it also offers the only direct flight from the US to Tenerife, connecting Newark (EWR) with TFS. A diverse selection of both full-fare and budget airlines operate here.
A layover at this airport is quite rare – in fact, I’ve never experienced one. Most travelers arriving at this airport intend to stay in Tenerife, aside from those heading to smaller Canary Islands like La Palma.
Location and how to get there
Located approximately 38 miles from Santa Cruz, Tenerife South serves as the primary airport for international tourists visiting the island. Its proximity to popular resort areas on the southern and western coasts makes it convenient; it's just 10 miles from Costa Adeje, nine miles from Los Cristianos, and four miles from El Médano.
The easiest way to reach the airport is by driving or taking a taxi, but there are also Titsa-operated buses. Line 111 connects Santa Cruz in the north with Tenerife South, while night bus route 711 serves the same route after dark.
Terminals and facilities
With just one terminal and one runway, Tenerife South is straightforward to navigate, although it can become quite busy during peak travel times, particularly when international flights surge. I always recommend arriving well in advance if you're traveling during busy holidays like Christmas or Easter.
Tenerife South boasts a variety of shops to explore, including Mango, Parfois, and Sunglass Hut. I always pick up a small toy for my son at Canarykids. The airport also features a pharmacy and a chapel. For dining, my favorite spot is Shikku Market for delicious Asian fare, along with options like O’Leary’s Pub, Burger King, and Upper Crust for sandwiches. Plus, there are several Duty Free stores for souvenirs and local goods.
If you're flying first class or have lounge access, the Montaña Roja VIP Lounge offers complimentary snacks and drinks, shower facilities, a children's play area, and a sun terrace with a view of the runway. Major car rental companies like Hertz, SIXT, and Cicar are available at TFS.
Essential information
While I haven’t needed to travel between Tenerife's airports, if you do, the Titsa bus line 343 provides a connection between Tenerife South and Tenerife North.
For those taking the direct flight from the US to Tenerife South, customs waits are usually brief. As many incoming flights are from EU countries, passport control is often not required for most travelers, making the process smooth. I’ve consistently enjoyed a quick passage when flying this route.
To access free Wi-Fi at Tenerife Sur, simply enter your email address.
Choosing the best Tenerife airport for your travels
Curious about the differences between Tenerife North and South airports? It may seem unusual for a small island to have two international airports, but they serve distinct purposes and are situated in different regions of Tenerife, catering to various types of travelers.
When deciding whether to fly into Tenerife North or South, your departure city and airport should be your primary consideration. Although there is some overlap in flight options, you might find that one airport is more accessible than the other depending on your travel plans.
Certain destinations, such as Madrid (MAD), offer flights to both airports in Tenerife. When I fly from Madrid to the island, I always compare flight options at both airports to find the best prices and schedules, especially if I’m renting a car in Tenerife and can adjust my driving plans.
For those traveling from the United States seeking non-stop flights, your only choice is Tenerife South. If you're open to layovers, the options are vast. You could fly into Madrid or another city in Spain, giving you the flexibility to land at either airport. Stopping in a European city outside Spain may also open up more routes to Tenerife South. I recommend checking Dinogo to explore your departure and arrival options.
Ultimately, particularly if you’re renting a car, the airport you choose might not be critical if you're willing to drive a little longer. Your departure city could influence your choice as well. However, if you do have options, select the airport closest to your hotel for convenience, or the one that offers the best savings.
Approaching the conclusion
Tenerife North (TFN) and Tenerife South (TFS) are both easy-to-navigate airports, featuring abundant duty-free shopping, dining options, and various amenities. Choose the one that aligns with your accommodation or let your airline and departure city guide your decision.
Overview of this guide
Having lived in Spain for almost twenty years, Tenerife ranks high on my list of favorite holiday destinations. Residing in Madrid, I frequently fly to TFN but occasionally opt for TFS. My airport choice hinges on flight prices, availability, and my travel itinerary, which you should consider as well.
