A giant 14.4-foot (4.4-meter) saltwater crocodile was caught at a remote tourist spot in Australia's Northern Territory.
Weighing an estimated 771 pounds (350 kilograms), the crocodile was trapped by wildlife rangers last Friday at Flora River Nature Park, a well-known tourist area southwest of Katherine, an outback town.
According to a representative from the Northern Territory Department of Tourism, Sport, and Culture, this is the largest crocodile to be caught in the region in recent years.
The crocodile has been transported to a crocodile farm, where it may be used for breeding purposes, as stated by the spokesperson.
In July 2018, a larger saltwater crocodile, measuring 15.4 feet (4.7 meters), was captured in the Katherine River, closer to the coast.
Saltwater crocodiles are the largest species of crocodiles and the biggest living reptiles on Earth. Adult males can grow up to 23 feet (7 meters) long and weigh over 2,200 pounds (998 kg). These powerful predators usually inhabit brackish coastal waters, including mangrove swamps, river estuaries, and lagoons.
The Northern Territory is home to an estimated 100,000 saltwater crocodiles, according to state government figures. These creatures are protected by both state and federal laws and are not culled in the region.
Problematic crocodiles in the Northern Territory are located and removed by wildlife rangers using traps and harpoons. On average, over 250 troublesome crocodiles are captured each year and either relocated to farms or euthanized.
So far this year, 167 saltwater crocodiles have been captured across the Top End, the northernmost region of the Northern Territory. In this area, 80 traps have been strategically placed, according to state authorities.
