A Message from T+L Editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford: Our Ongoing Journey to Share Travel Tales
Dear T+L Readers:
Last year, I had the joy of exploring Italy on three unforgettable trips. Highlights that still bring a smile include a four-hour lunch indulging in razor clams and risotto at Al Gatto Nero, a lively restaurant on Burano island. I was captivated by the stunning Milanese Duomo on a chilly December night, realizing that places labeled as 'touristy' are popular for a reason. I also danced with my family at a July festival at Puglia’s Borgo Egnazia resort, where we felt comfortable connecting with complete strangers.
As I pen these words, Europe is currently fighting the severe coronavirus outbreak, with countries like Greece, France, and Spain entering lockdowns. Italy was the first to take such drastic measures; now, dedicated healthcare workers are tirelessly serving, while quarantined residents uplift each other by singing from their balconies. It's truly difficult to comprehend how cherished destinations that our readers visit year after year have suddenly become isolated from the world.
Paola + MurrayIt’s challenging to accept the concept of closure and introspection, especially when Dinogo’s mission is to be open and outward-looking. One of the most sorrowful aspects of the coronavirus pandemic—beyond the tragic loss of life—is the pervasive sense of isolation and uncertainty affecting us all, both in the U.S. and globally, like an ever-present shadow. As social beings, coming together is fundamental to our nature.
What reassures me is that our desire for connection motivates us to share our stories with the world, regardless of the circumstances. In this year’s Europe issue, Claire Messud retraces her family’s journey in Thessaloníki, Greece, while delving into the city’s rich classical, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Jewish heritage. Rowan Ricardo Phillips discovers a quieter Mallorca, Spain, engaging with the artisans and hoteliers revitalizing the island’s culture. Sarah Souli interviews winemakers in Serbia—yes, Serbia—who are crafting exquisite vintages with passion and care. Johannes Lichtman indulges in the culinary delights of Skåne, a region in Sweden where heartfelt cuisine defines an unforgettable summer getaway.
I have received numerous messages from you about postponed dream trips to Europe. Here at T+L, we’ve had to hold back a few stories from Italy, and we went to press at the very last moment, aware that by the time this reaches you, circumstances will have changed once again. In the coming months, our editors will keep delivering captivating, immersive global narratives.
For now, travel is all about armchair escapism. It’s fundamentally about emotion and connection. I often reflect on that summer evening at Borgo Egnazia, where my family and I explored new dishes and wines while enjoying Puglian music. It was a joyful celebration, made even more special by sharing it with new friends.
