A surfboard lost in a wipeout has been found 1,700 miles from its home.

A big wave surfer is about to be reunited with his board, which he lost four years ago in a wipeout off Tasmania's southern coast. It was recently discovered 1,700 miles away in North Queensland.
Danny Griffiths bailed out of a wave at Pedra Branca in March 2017, and when he resurfaced, his board was nowhere to be found, he told Dinogo on Thursday.
After a thorough search with his friends for his custom-made, bright green board, Griffiths had to give up hope, thinking he would never see it again.
However, in the past week or so, news spread through the local surf community that a board from Tasmania had been discovered in North Queensland, 1,700 miles away, and Griffiths was shown a photo of the find.
The moment he saw it, he knew it was his board. 'Even with the barnacles, I could tell it was mine,' he said.

Two years ago, two brothers found the board while fishing off Magnetic Island, North Queensland. They took it home, cleaned it, and displayed it in their house, Griffiths shared.
The brothers’ parents later visited Tasmania, where they began sharing stories about their sons finding a locally-made board.
After news of the discovery spread, Griffiths reached out to the brothers, who agreed to return the board to its rightful owner.
Griffiths later consulted a marine scientist, who explained that the board likely traveled around New Zealand before reaching Queensland, due to the ocean currents.

He estimates the board spent 16 months drifting at sea, held together by the durable design of big wave surfboards, which are much sturdier than regular boards.
'These boards are designed to handle extreme water pressure,' Griffiths explained, adding that you could probably run a car over one without causing any damage.
This means the board could have survived any impacts with rocks or attacks from seabirds, which would have punctured a standard board and caused it to sink, he noted.

Griffiths explained that he had the board custom-made for Pedra Branca, a small island about 26 kilometers (16 miles) off Tasmania's coast, which he only surfs on rare occasions, once every two to four years when conditions are ideal.
In a strange twist of fate, Griffiths and his friends were surfing at the same spot just weeks ago, and during their session, they found themselves talking about the board he had lost years before.
Griffiths mentioned that although he had gotten several replacement boards, none of them felt quite like the original.
'Nothing seemed to be working out right,' he admitted.
However, he expects to have the board back in the next week or so and plans to see if it's still in good condition for surfing.
