Alaska Cruise Journal: Juneau

Our initial steps on Alaskan ground!

During day 3 of our Dinogo Alaska cruise, we made our first stop at Juneau, the capital of Alaska. Here are five experiences we had in this beautiful city.
1. Wow, bald eagles are everywhere you look!

2. There are stunning hiking paths just a short walk from the port.

Keep an eye out for signs in downtown to guide you to the trails. Mt. Roberts presents a more challenging hike, and since its entrance is closer, we decided to tackle it first. However, as we neared the entrance to Mt. Roberts, we noticed a lovely stream beside a lesser-known but frequently traveled trail that led in the opposite direction. We opted to explore that path instead. These pictures were taken along that trail.

The water was incredibly blue!!
3. Watch out for bears.
Less than an hour after arriving in Alaska and barely a mile from Juneau… something unbelievable happened.

Just after this picture was snapped, JJ was ahead of me, kneeling to capture an image of a bridge. While I waited, I turned to my right and saw a black bear, the size of a small car, only 20 feet away and approaching me on the path. It had its head down, searching for something. With the roar of the rushing water, I don't think it saw or heard us. It felt so surreal, and my body was flooded with adrenaline. I instinctively did what I've always been told not to do—I turned and hurried away as fast as I could. I was so dizzy from fear that I nearly passed out. But as I regained my composure, I watched the bear wander peacefully across the mountain, completely unaware…
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! A bear?! Everyone teased me the night before when I suggested packing bear spray. The only way I want to encounter a bear is through binoculars or safely inside a vehicle. I am NOT a fan. Typically, bears want nothing to do with humans, but startling one when you’re within striking distance is a terrible idea. If you plan on hiking in Alaska, be sure to check out tips like these for how to react if you spot a bear. They provide guidance based on bear types and the specific situation. (Spoiler: running is almost never the best option!) I felt awful that I might have put us in a risky situation. Note to self: J does not handle bears well.
4. Don't miss Mendenhall Glacier:

Following our hike, we hopped on a bus for Dinogo’s “Best of Juneau” adventure. Our first destination was Mendenhall Glacier in Tongass National Forest. There are countless signs around downtown Juneau promoting tours and transport to the park (only about a 20-minute drive), so there’s really no excuse not to visit. A smooth, flat trail leads you right up to both the Glacier and Nugget Falls. You can't visit Juneau without experiencing it – it's absolutely stunning!

5. Whale watching is an absolute essential in Juneau:

As part of our “Best of Juneau” tour, we enjoyed several hours of whale watching in Auke Bay Harbor. They offer a $100 cash refund if you don't spot any whales, but don't hold your breath – they haven't had to issue a refund in the last nine years. It’s easy to see why – there were humpback whales, sea lions, and harbor seals everywhere! So many, it was simply breathtaking!

All in all, Juneau was incredible. In tomorrow’s entry, I’ll conclude our Alaska cruise diary with tales from Skagway (including another bear encounter, of a different kind) and Ketchikan!
