American Airlines Unveils 5 New Routes to Europe’s Most Popular Destinations

Even though summer officially ends in a few weeks, if you're already drafting your wish list for next summer’s travels, American Airlines’ newly announced network expansion could provide some inspiration.

The Fort Worth-based airline has just rolled out its summer 2025 schedule, featuring five new routes to Europe, increased flight capacity to Asia, and new start dates for popular itineraries during the shoulder season.

Here’s everything you need to know about American Airlines’ plans for summer 2025.

American Airlines’ new and returning routes to Europe for 2025

Airlines such as Delta and United have been intensifying their focus on international routes lately, anticipating a bustling season for transatlantic travel. American Airlines is joining the fray, planning to resume flights to Copenhagen, Nice, and Naples from Philadelphia (which launched this summer on a seasonal basis) while also introducing five new or returning routes:

• Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in North Carolina to Athens International Airport (ATH) in Greece: Daily service begins on June 5 using Boeing 777-200ER aircraft
• Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) in Spain: Daily service begins on March 30 using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners
• Miami International Airport (MIA) to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) in Italy: Daily service starts on July 5 with Boeing 777-200ERs
• Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland: Daily service starts on May 23 using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners
• Philadelphia to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) in Italy: Daily service begins on May 23 with a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

The route from Philadelphia to Edinburgh is the only one returning; it last operated in 2019 before being cut during the pandemic as the airline phased out some of its older Boeing 757s and 767s. Tickets for all routes will be available for purchase starting September 9.

Enhanced premium offerings to Asia

For travelers planning a trip across the Pacific next summer, American Airlines is introducing larger aircraft, resulting in increased seating capacity, including more premium class options.

This upgrade will affect four specific routes:

• From Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND): Daily service on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
• From Dallas to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport (NRT): Daily service on a Boeing 777-200ER
• From Dallas to Shanghai (PVG): Daily service on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
• From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to HND: Twice daily service on a 787-9 Dreamliner
  

American Airlines to enhance its popular European routes

Alongside the introduction of new routes, American Airlines announced plans to extend the seasonal availability of several popular flights. Notably, the airline will continue its daily winter service between Miami and Paris at least through next summer. Additionally, the start dates for summer flights will be moved up: flights from Philadelphia to Athens and from Dallas–Fort Worth to Barcelona will now commence on March 30 (earlier than the previous May and June start dates), and the Philadelphia to Naples route will begin on May 5, a month ahead of schedule.
