Turbulence is often the reason why a passenger’s suitcase might fall from the overhead bin during a flight.
Now, it’s being blamed for a decision by an airline to remove a beloved snack from its menu during flights.
Korean Air has confirmed that, starting August 15, it will stop serving ramyeon instant noodles to economy class passengers on long-haul flights.
The airline explained in a press release, 'Burn accidents are common when serving ramyeon due to the hot water. In economy class, flight attendants are required to carry multiple cups of hot noodles, and with passengers seated closely together, the risk of burns is significantly higher.'
The airline stated that the adjustment to its inflight snack options on long-haul routes is a response to the growing frequency of turbulence. They reported that turbulence incidents have more than doubled in 2024 compared to 2019.
Korean Air clarified that this decision is 'a proactive step' aimed at reducing the risk of burn accidents.
'To improve passenger experience and expand snack choices, a self-service snack bar is now available on long-haul flights. We are dedicated to passenger safety and will select snacks based on route and customer preferences,' the airline added in the release.
The available snacks include sandwiches, corn dogs, pizza, and hot pockets.
Passengers in first-class and prestige cabins will still be offered ramyeon during their flights.
Korean Air, ranked the 11th best airline globally for 2024, is among the many carriers concerned about the long-term impact of turbulence, which experts link to the rising effects of climate change.
In 2022, Paul Williams, an atmospheric science professor at the University of Reading in the UK, shared with Dinogo Travel that forecasts show turbulence could double or even triple in the coming years.
'Typically, a transatlantic flight experiences about 10 minutes of turbulence. In the future, this could increase to 20 minutes or even half an hour,' he explained.
During periods of turbulence, pilots may instruct flight attendants to halt the service of hot food and beverages.
In May of this year, a flight from London to Singapore experienced such severe turbulence that one passenger tragically lost their life, and 71 others were injured.
During the intense turbulence, meal trays, food containers, plastic bottles, and even tea and coffee pots were among the items that were sent crashing to the floor.
