The finest warm spots to visit in the US during October
While much of the mainland US experiences a rapid cool-down in fall, there are warm pockets, especially along the coasts. In addition to my Florida favorites, Dinogo data highlights Honolulu as a top spot in Hawaii. Iconic West Coast cities like LA and San Francisco remain favorites, boasting mild weather and minimal rainfall.
1. Key West, Florida
- Average temperature in October: 81°F
Florida is the ultimate destination for autumn sunshine and warm weather in the continental US. At the southern tip lies Key West, where long, sunny days and warm nights define October. The average temperature stays around 81°F throughout the month, rarely dipping below 75°.
Key West's remote location has imparted a wonderfully quirky and tropical vibe. Its compact size of just seven square miles makes it perfect for a weekend getaway. Enjoy long strolls interspersed with refreshing dips at secluded beaches and savor abundant seafood.
I adore the tranquility and stunning sunsets at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, along with the classic Caribbean dishes at Blue Heaven. October marks the arrival of stone-crab season – absolutely delightful!
2. Miami, Florida
- Average temperature in October: 81°F
With its relaxed atmosphere, pristine white beaches, and gently swaying palms, Miami always appears to be warm. The peak summer months can be excessively hot and crowded, but as October approaches, the temperatures settle into what I consider perfect.
The monthly average sits at 81°F, with a high average of 86°F. That’s classic beach weather, and in October, the crowds are far fewer compared to spring and summer. Beyond South Beach, visit Bal Harbour for a trendy scene, or head to Virginia Key Beach Park for peace and stunning views.
You might encounter a few heavy rain showers, but Miami boasts enough museums and galleries to keep you entertained for days. At the fascinating Museum of Graffiti, don’t miss the exceptional Art of Hip Hop exhibition.
If you're feeling inspired, make your way to the iconic Wynwood Walls for an unforgettable street art experience.
3. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
- Average temperature in October: 79°F
As you head north along Florida's coastline, October temperatures in Fort Lauderdale dip slightly. However, the change is hardly noticeable, with average temperatures falling just below 80°, while the average highs match Miami at 86°F.
When the sun is shining, the highlight is Fort Lauderdale’s 23 miles of stunning beachfront. Las Olas is the bustling heart of the area, featuring a long, easily accessible beach and a lively boulevard filled with shops, bars, and restaurants that attract both locals and visitors.
I personally favor Dania Beach located to the south of the city. The deck of the Quarterdeck seafood restaurant at the pier is the perfect spot to unwind with giant margaritas and platters of fresh shellfish.
Just to the north, Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park teems with birds, wildlife, and sea turtles. It offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of coastal development.
4. Palm Beach, Florida
- Average temperature in October: 81°F
Palm Beach may be known as the billionaire’s playground, but you don’t need a fortune to enjoy its allure. In fact, uncovering its opulent yet seemingly hidden treasures is part of the charm of visiting.
With October temperatures averaging in the 80s and bright blue skies, Golden Beach should be your first stop. Stroll along the A1A to admire some of America’s most luxurious homes, and take a chance on a walk along the private beach. Don’t forget to check out Worth Avenue for some (likely window) shopping.
The best part? You can reserve a spot at one of Palm Beach’s most glamorous resorts. You don’t need to be a guest at The Breakers to grab a seat at its oceanfront Seafood Bar, nor do you have to stay at the celebrity-favorite The Colony to secure a poolside table at Swifty’s. Just remember: dress to impress.
5. Orlando, Florida
- Average temperature in October: 75°F
On clear days, Orlando offers everything you could want. Nearby beaches such as Daytona, New Smyrna (ideal for surfing), and Clearwater are within reach. Also close by is the stunning Everglades, perfect for immersing yourself in nature. In Downtown Orlando, Lake Eola Park serves as a serene urban retreat. Plus, with 2024 seeing 48 Orlando restaurants awarded Michelin stars, outdoor dining is definitely an option.
When the weather shifts, you’ll still have plenty of choices. Attractions like Disney World, Universal Resort, Legoland, and Harry Potter’s Wizarding World are the main draws, bringing in tens of millions of visitors each year. For something more educational yet equally enjoyable, the remarkable Kennedy Space Center is just 50 miles away.
6. Las Vegas, Nevada
- Average temperature in October: 70°F
Be sure to stop by Chinatown to indulge in delicious Asian cuisine and mingle with top resort chefs during their downtime. Stroll through the European-inspired Tivoli Village, where you can shop to your heart’s content in Boca Park or hit the links at TPC.
Further west, get away from the city at the Red Rock National Conservation Area, offering 30 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
Check into the Red Rock Resort & Spa and request a room with a Red Rock view to enjoy stunning vistas of the sandstone cliffs. It’s the perfect contrast to the hustle of Sin City behind you.
The best warm destinations in Europe to visit in October
In addition to my picks—two of the world’s great capitals—there are a few other European gems that shine in October. Dinogo data indicates that Greece and Nice on the French Riviera retain their summer warmth well into the fall.
7. Lisbon, Portugal
- Average temperature in October: 64°F
Portugal’s capital is truly on the rise. Lisbon’s blend of history and allure, laid-back vibe, affordable prices, delicious cuisine, and year-round warmth have captured global interest.
This has made it a hotspot for digital nomads in particular. The vibrant energy is palpable throughout the city. October is an excellent time to explore the seven hills with its grand boulevards and charming cobbled streets that characterize its neighborhoods. Average temperatures hover in the mid-60s, with highs frequently reaching the low 70s.
Warm enough to enjoy the beautifully developed riverfront; cool enough to tackle the steep streets without breaking a sweat. Rain is uncommon.
Venture into the neighborhoods of Alto, Chiado, and Alfama. Leave the map behind and follow your instincts through the winding streets. Along the way, you’ll discover the best of Lisbon.
Amazing restaurants, bustling bars (often spilling out onto the streets), and delightful local shops. When the day (and your feet) are worn out, hop on the iconic yellow tram to get home.
8. Barcelona, Spain
- Average temperature in October: 63°F
The city of Gaudí is my absolute favorite in the world. Its rich history and remarkable development are evident in every street and structure. From the Gothic Quarter’s maze of twisting alleys to the broad avenues of Eixample, the post-industrial vibe of Poblenou to the majestic heights of MontJuïc. Throughout it all, you’ll find the stunning architecture and art of Antoni Gaudí.
Park Güell, La Pedrera-Casa Milà, and the Sagrada Família should be your top destinations. The Sagrada Família, in particular, shines brilliantly in the autumn sun. Aim to visit in the late afternoon when the low rays illuminate its colorful windows.
October averages around 63°F but often reaches into the mid-70s. As one of the driest cities in Europe, Barcelona faces drought, making rain a rare concern (though water conservation is definitely important).
The best warm destinations in Asia to explore in October
If you're willing to splurge on a plane ticket, Asia transforms into a tropical paradise in October. Hot, humid, vibrant, and alive – it's a sensory awakening.
For those seeking megacities, Dinogo data reveals that Hong Kong and Singapore both hover around 80°F. Trust me, the experience is worth every bead of sweat.
9. Thailand
- Average temperature in September: 82°F
Outside of Bangkok, much of Thailand experiences hot and humid weather in October. The quieter, greener north avoids much of the fall rainfall that drenches the south, making it an ideal warm destination for October. Chiang Mai beautifully blends modernity and tradition, attracting many tourists.
A few hours further north, Chiang Rai offers a more laid-back glimpse of traditional Thai life. Rich in Lanna culture, it features many temples, with Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, being the most exotic and intriguing.
Chiang Rai also serves as a gateway to the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar (Burma) converge at the Mekong River.
Be sure to visit the Mae Sai market, where you can obtain a border pass and venture into Tachileik in Myanmar for some shopping.
10. Fukuoka, Japan
- Average October temperature: 66°F
On the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, the charming city of Fukuoka is experiencing a delightful transformation while maintaining its low-key charm. October temperatures typically range from the mid 60s to the mid 70s, and rainfall is uncommon.
This makes it perfect for exploring one of Japan’s most compact and pedestrian-friendly cities. Browse quirky shops on Hakata Kawabata-dōri street, enjoy a picnic in Ohori Park, or take a ferry to the lush Nokonoshima Island Park.
Fukuoka's vibrant street food culture has established it as a must-visit for food enthusiasts, particularly for the famous Hakata Ramen. Be sure to check out the independent yatai street food stalls in Nagahama, Nakasu, and Tenjin, and don’t hesitate to greet the vendors.
The yatai embody community and socializing, serving as a lifestyle for locals. Put your phone away and don’t overstay your welcome, as seating is limited!
