Broadway Welcomes A-List Stars — Here's Where You Can Catch Their Performances in NYC
Even Hollywood's biggest names, from film icons to TV stars, occasionally hone their craft through live theater. This upcoming season in New York City features a renowned movie star making her Broadway debut, alongside several television favorites returning to the stage.
The actors' strike may have influenced these decisions — Emmy winner Sarah Paulson is set to open on Broadway in November, though she was originally slated for a new series inspired by Glennon Doyle’s memoir, 'Untamed.' Meanwhile, Rachel McAdams had already committed to Broadway for her role in 'Mary Jane' next spring, well before the strike. So, if you're eager to see Harry Potter dance or Ray Donovan as a priest, now is the moment to catch them live.

The star of Harry Potter has taken on numerous leading roles on Broadway since rising to fame as a 12-year-old in the blockbuster film series. His performances include notable productions like "Equus" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Radcliffe also led the sold-out off-Broadway run of "Merrily" last year, paving the way for its Broadway debut. This Stephen Sondheim musical follows the journey of three friends in the entertainment world over thirty years, unfolding in reverse — beginning at their lowest point and culminating in their youthful joy. Popular songs include "Old Friends" and "Not a Day Goes By." (Now open)

Based on Philip Roth’s National Book Award-winning novel, the play features John Turturro, who recently starred in the Apple TV sensation Severance. This erotic tale follows a decadent puppet maker as he descends into madness. Public Theater, located at 425 Lafayette St.; visit publictheater.org for more information.
Here’s the disappointing news: Alicia Keys will not be performing in this show. However, the music features many of her well-known songs along with some new compositions. While it doesn’t recount her life story, it draws from her experiences growing up in a small apartment, pursuing her dreams, and navigating family tensions. As she shared with The New York Times last June, "There’s nothing in this piece that unfolds without me being deeply involved in it." (Currently in previews, opening on Nov. 19)
Aubrey Plaza

Lucille Lortel Theatre, located at 121 Christopher St.; visit dannyandthedeepbluesea.com for more information.
The Emmy nominee from White Lotus is making her off-Broadway stage debut this season in John Patrick Shanley’s "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea." Plaza described the role as "an actor's dream" in her interview with Vanity Fair. Known for her role in Parks and Recreation, she will star alongside Christopher Abbott (Girls), playing a troubled woman who crosses paths with a brooding truck driver in a Bronx bar. While sparks fly, this story is far from a romantic comedy. (Previews begin Oct. 30, opening on Nov. 13)

Now, the Academy Award nominee for “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” takes on the dual role of playwright and performer. He describes his new solo show as “the stories and lies people have told me, and those I’ve told myself.” (Scheduled for March 10-31, 2024)
Angelina Jolie
“The Outsiders”
Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, located at 242 W. 45th St.; visit outsidersmusical.com for more details.
While there’s a major Hollywood star associated with this production, Angelina Jolie will not be performing. Instead, she’s stepping into the role of Broadway producer after witnessing an earlier version at the La Jolla Playhouse. This new musical, set in Oklahoma during the late '60s, is inspired by S.E. Hinton’s novel and the Francis Ford Coppola film. It follows a group of alienated teens, and reviews from the previous production indicate it can get quite intense — “It’s a fistfight, not a dance,” noted The New York Times.
