In May 2019, British artist Bruce Munro introduced a stunning display featuring over 58,000 solar-powered, fiber-optic “flowers” that light up a 15-acre landscape near Paso Robles, situated midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Previously known as Field of Light at Sensorio, this installation is Munro’s largest and his first solar-powered exhibit in the U.S.
The initial exhibition attracted more than 145,000 visitors from 41 countries and was intended to run until June 2020, but it was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news for those who missed it: thanks to “overwhelming demand,” as noted on the official website, the open-air exhibit has reopened and is set to continue through September 5, 2022. With the addition of a second installation called “Light Towers,” the project has been renamed Light at Sensorio.

The new installation features 69 towering structures, each six feet tall, crafted from over 17,000 wine bottles, reflecting Paso Robles’ prominent wine industry. Their colors shift in harmony with classical music compositions.
Munro has created similar light installations in Australia, London, and South Korea, expressing that his project in Paso Robles has been a long-awaited endeavor. “[Light at Sensorio] is a passion for me,” Munro shared in a video about the project last year. “It’s something I’ve envisioned bringing around the world to spread joy and connection among people.”
