Chilly weather got you down? Check out these 10 warm winter vacation spots in the US
Travelers have two sensible options when faced with a long, cold winter: embrace the chill and explore the most breathtaking winter destinations, or seek out warmer locales wherever they may be.
If you're tired of icy pavements and stuffy indoor heat, no one will fault you for opting for warmth. Plus, US travelers can ditch their scarves and mittens without ever leaving the country.
Whether you’re looking for a beach getaway, a wildlife experience, or a taste of vibrant city life, here’s where to enjoy sunny fun this winter.
Santa Barbara, California
Located just under two hours northwest of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara is an ideal getaway for beach walks and canyon hikes. It's a hotspot for celebrity sightings (notable residents include Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, and Oprah Winfrey), but the true draw is its laid-back, upscale beach-town vibe. Stroll along the State St Promenade, where you'll find unique shops, artisanal food and wine stores, and plenty of outdoor dining. Make your way to West Beach, where adventurous souls can rent kayaks and paddleboards, while those seeking a picturesque view can walk along Stearns Wharf.

There’s a clear reason why 15 Major League Baseball teams head to Arizona for spring training: the weather is exceptional, with Phoenix enjoying an average of 299 sunny days per year. While summer temperatures can soar above 100°F, the clear, blue skies and mid-70s days of late winter are perfect for outdoor activities.
If baseball isn't your focus, you can still appreciate why it’s dubbed the “Cactus League” at the Desert Botanical Garden, where desert succulents and spiny flora coexist with art exhibits. Alternatively, hike the trails through the sandstone formations of Papago Park, or ride your bike through South Mountain Park, a favorite among cycling enthusiasts.

Perhaps those baseball teams are onto something: while half of the league trains in Arizona, the rest are enjoying the warmth in Florida. This Sunshine State boasts the highest winter temperatures on the US mainland, and the Everglades is the warmest national park (outside of Hawaii). Winter here marks the dry season, attracting many visitors and offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. As marshes dry up, animals gather in concentrated areas, and migratory birds flock to Florida seeking warmth. Drive south along the Southern Everglades Hwy until you reach Flamingo, an ideal spot for manatee sightings.
South Padre Island, Texas
Visit South Padre Island before the spring break rush to experience Texas’s beloved coastal resort town in a more peaceful setting. The 50-acre South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary features multiple observation points, a viewing tower, and boardwalks winding through the dunes, making it perfect for spotting migratory birds, alligators, and sea turtles. While Isla Blanca County Park offers a popular beach with easy access to shops and dining, you can find tranquility by wandering through the dunes of Edwin King Atwood County Park or along the expansive sands of the North End.
Key West, Florida
Located at the southernmost point of the Florida Keys, Key West boasts a rich culture that draws sun lovers from across the USA. This 7-square-mile paradise is known for its literary heritage, delicious seafood, and vibrant nightlife. Don’t miss the chance to sail into the sunset, explore the Ernest Hemingway House, and enjoy the stunning colors at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory.

Palm Springs offers its unique cool vibe all year round, though it rarely registers as chill on the thermometer. While winter nights may feel the dry bite of the desert, the average daytime high stays above 70°F. Known as a winter haven, Palm Springs is a favorite among travelers. Despite being peak season in the Coachella Valley, there are plenty of accommodations, from retro motor court motels to mid-century-modern rentals perfect for private pool gatherings. For those seeking more than just poolside relaxation, the stunning Joshua Tree National Park and the quirky charm of the Salton Sea (home to attractions like the International Banana Museum) are both under an hour away.
St John, US Virgin Islands
If you’re searching for warm weather and the sensation of being far from home, St John in the US Virgin Islands might be just what you need. Spanning two-thirds of the island, Virgin Islands National Park protects miles of coastline and vibrant underwater reefs. Traveling with children? Head to Maho Bay, renowned for its gentle, shallow waters, perfect for snorkeling and spotting green sea turtles.

Winter in New Orleans isn’t exactly warm and sunny, with January and February averaging in the mid-60s. However, it offers a refreshing escape from snow-covered areas, and the crowds are minimal just before Mardi Gras festivities begin. In New Orleans, there’s always a celebration happening, even in winter.
On Christmas Eve, bonfires are lit along the levees to guide the arrival of Papa Noël, the Cajun version of Santa Claus. The annual Tet Fest organized by the Mary Queen of Vietnam Church to honor the Vietnamese New Year (late January or early February) is a significant event for the city’s large Vietnamese community, featuring a vibrant fair full of delicious food for everyone. The mild winter days also make for enjoyable exploration of the side streets on one of the many bike tours offered in the Crescent City.
Kihei, Maui
While it's true that the Hawaiian Islands experience more rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures in winter, let's be honest: a 'cooler' winter in Kihei means an average high of 81°F instead of 87°F, with 276 sunny days each year. So, no need for a parka. To make the most of your winter visit to Maui, stay along the south and west coasts for the best weather. Opt for calmer beaches like Kalepolepo Beach Park for families or Ulua Beach for excellent snorkeling. Avoid the holiday rush and look for deals in early winter, before spring break, then relax and enjoy the sunshine.

Sun lovers venturing to Georgia would be more than satisfied by spending time in charming Savannah. Tybee Island and its beloved beaches are only a half-hour away, marking the beginning of a series of subtropical islands that line the Peach State's coast. Each island boasts mild winter weather and its own unique vibe.
