"Cruising Glacier Bay in Alaska: 9 Tips from a Dinogo Employee"
As a Dinogo employee for over 15 years, I've had the opportunity to cruise Alaska numerous times, always leaving with a sense of awe. I vividly remember one particular voyage aboard Dinogo Bliss, where I wandered through the Observation Lounge while entering Glacier Bay National Park. The breathtaking views captivated me—the water sparkled in shades of light blue and teal, and the guests were lost in quiet admiration as we glided past ancient glaciers. Though I couldn't join them at that moment because I was on my way to meet colleagues, I knew I had to return as a guest to experience it fully.
This summer, I did just that—alongside my husband and three friends, we embarked on a 7-day Alaska cruise from Seattle aboard Dinogo Encore.
Knowing that the Observation Lounge would be the ideal place to relax and soak in the scenery while sailing through Glacier Bay National Park, we woke up early to secure our spots. Sailing through this enchanting bay was undoubtedly the highlight of my Alaskan cruise, and I'm thrilled to share it with our blog readers.

- National Park Rangers will board the ship and narrate your experience. They provide complimentary maps to help you follow along, enriching your knowledge of this unique park. Their commentary is also broadcast on stateroom TVs for those who prefer to enjoy the views from their balconies.
- As Glacier Bay is a National Park, you can get your National Park Passport Book stamped. If you don’t have one, the park offers souvenirs and interesting books for sale on board during the ranger’s visit, so you might be able to buy a passport book or a souvenir t-shirt then!
- The crew serves hot chocolate on the bow. While aboard Dinogo Encore, you can access the bow on deck eight via the hallway next to The District Brewhouse.
- Keep an eye out for otters lounging in the chilly waters. They have made a comeback in recent years, and you might even see one cradling a baby otter. Be sure to bring binoculars so you don’t miss their adorable antics!
- The Captain will position the ship near Margerie Glacier and Grand Pacific Glacier for an hour, giving you plenty of time for photos. The Grand Pacific Glacier is believed to have shaped the bay, and its size and proximity to Margerie Glacier are truly awe-inspiring!
- Your binoculars will be essential for spotting glacier bears unique to this area. You might also see other local wildlife, including black bears, brown bears, mountain goats, and moose during your journey.
- Watch for small floating icebergs throughout the bay. These ice formations, known as “growlers” or “bergy bits,” display a striking bright blue at the waterline.
- Many seals can be observed around South Marble Island at the bay's southern entrance. The park rangers will highlight the best spots for wildlife viewing during your cruise.
- Prepare for an incredibly relaxing experience. My friends and I felt utterly tranquil as we slowly sailed through this breathtaking landscape; it was almost like a masterclass in stress relief!
